A plant-based diet is certainly not a new concept – veganism and vegetarianism have been around for thousands of years – but it’s a lifestyle that’s become more and more popular in the last couple of decades. So it’s no surprise that in response to this rising interest, many of America’s national food and beverage chains are beginning to offer more plant-based alternatives.
One of the biggest categories of plant-based products? Milk substitutes. And one of the most popular milk substitutes? You guessed it: oat milk.
While oat milk continues to increase in availability throughout the country, it can still be tricky to find – so we’ve put together a list of the major coffee and grocery store chains that offer this non-dairy favorite.

Why is oat milk a popular milk alternative?
Oat milk is made by soaking or blending whole oat grains with water, and then extracting the pulp to create a plant-based milk. People love it for its creamy consistency and mildly sweet flavor, which works especially well as a milk substitute for coffee and other beverages.
But it’s also a popular milk alternative because it fits so many different diets. This plant-based milk is not only vegan and dairy free, but it’s also naturally free from lactose, soy, and nuts, and often free from gluten as well – so it’s a great choice for people with food allergies.
Aside from being tasty and versatile, oat milk also comes with health benefits. While it’s higher in carbs and calories than cow’s milk and most other alternative milks, it also contains healthy fats and it’s a good source of fiber, making it a heart-healthy choice that can help lower cholesterol levels.
Because it’s less nutrient-dense than traditional milk, commercial oat milk is often fortified with vitamins and minerals like vitamin B and D, calcium, and potassium to increase its nutritional profile. One thing to watch out for: many oat milk brands include a lot of added sugars, so check the label for sugar content or spring for unsweetened where possible.
Major grocery store chains that sell oat milk (and the top brands they carry)
The good news is that when it comes to national grocery stores, oat milk is widely available to purchase by the bottle or carton, and you can find the product at almost all major chains.
Just keep in mind that specific brands and overall availability will vary based on location, so chances are not every brand listed will be carried at your local store – but you can always check online or call ahead if you’re looking for something specific.
Whether you’re vegan, you have a dairy allergy, or you’re simply an oat milk fan – here’s where you can grab a carton at major grocery, convenience, and warehouse chains across the US, along with the top brands that the stores currently carry (some carry so many, we had to stop at 10!).

Major coffee chains with oat milk on the menu
In the past few years, coffee chains like Starbucks, Dunkin’, and Coffee Bean have led the way in adding oat milk to the menu. Oat milk is a particularly popular choice when it comes to coffee beverages because it’s got a creamy consistency that’s close to cow’s milk and it tends to steam better than other alternative milks.
Many chains include oat milk in some of the signature drinks on their menu, and some, like Peet’s Coffee, have even taken the plant-based mindset a step further by removing the surcharge for their non-dairy milks (at least for a promotional period).
It’s worth noting that at this time, there are no national fast food chains that offer oat milk on their menus. That includes major chains like McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Burger King, Wendy’s, and Chick-fil-a. Panera Bread does not offer oat milk either (although they do have almond milk on the menu).
When it comes to coffee houses, different franchises may have slightly different offerings or carry different brands of oat milk – and new brands are continually cycled out or added to the rotation – so take the current brand listed with a grain of salt! Most of these coffee shops will also use the brand’s specially crafted barista blends of oat milk, so be sure to ask your local barista if you’re curious about the specific brand or ingredients.
Here are the major coffee shops across the US where you can order oat milk in your beverage.

Oat milk is not currently found on the menu at any major national fast food chains or quick service restaurants – including those that serve coffee such as McDonald’s, Chick-fil-a and Taco Bell.
Unfortunately, none of America’s major restaurant chains (including those that sell breakfast like Denny’s, IHOP, and The Cheesecake Factory) currently offer oat milk on their menu.
