This unique product stemming from one of the greatest culinary countries ever, Italy, is something you definitely want to check out!
Iโm talking about amaretto extract, a wonderful flavoring agent that can offer a really unique twist to many of your dishes! Itโs often used in baking and confectionery, adding a nutty, sweet, and slightly bitter taste to the many things you can pair it with.
Amaretto extract has a distinct nutty flavor thatโs similar to almond extract, although it still has its own unique tastes, including a slight bitterness โ amaretto roughly translates to โa little bitterโ in Italian. Weโll talk more about the differences between this and almond extract later!
As great and unique as it is, you want to be sure that youโre using a high-quality and proper amaretto extract, as not just every product is worth your money! And thatโs exactly what weโll discuss in this article โ weโve tested many amaretto extracts in order to give you the best ones, ranking them so that you can avoid using any bad ones!

Letโs check them out!
What is amaretto extract?
Amaretto extract is a liquid with a very concentrated flavor made from the bitter almond-like kernels of apricot pits and sometimes including or exclusively made from peach pits โ it also sometimes includes almonds. These ingredients are added into alcohol, along with sweeteners such as honey or sugar, which are all then left to process.
The alcohol, which is usually unflavored vodka, extracts all the delicious flavors from all the ingredients that are added. Then, after a long period of time, itโs filtered, leaving us with amaretto extract!
It has a very powerful and distinct flavor, which means that you should be careful with it โ donโt go dumping it into everything, but rather start with just a little and add as desired. A couple drops go a long way with amaretto extract!
Key differences between amaretto extract and almond extractย
The biggest difference between amaretto extract and almond extract is taste. But it’s subtle! You see, the first thing you’ll notice when tasting amaretto extract is that it boasts a nutty flavor thatโs similar to almond extract, with both extracts lending their delicious and nutty characteristics to many dishes!
However, amaretto extract has a distinct bitter flavor that comes from the apricot or peach pits that itโs often made from โ in fact, despite the almond flavor, amaretto extract doesnโt always contain almonds!
You may also find cherry undertones in your amaretto extract depending on the brand and ingredients used, which you wonโt find in almond extract.
Almond extract usually uses bitter almond oil, which has a stronger almond flavor. However, it doesnโt have the same bitter flavor that amaretto extract does. Plus, amaretto extract often has things like sugar and honey added that add a sweetness to it.
So yes, you can use these interchangeably โ just be aware of the different flavor profiles!
How to use amaretto extract in recipes
Amaretto extract is awesome for baking, as well as for adding flavor to things like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and more!
Just a few drops of it will add a nutty and sweet yet slightly bitter taste, adding a new dimension to your dish! Itโs popular in cookies, muffins, and cakes, and is also a great substitute for amaretto liqueurโฆ
OliveNation, which is a brand weโll talk about later, recommends using ยผ to ยฝ a teaspoon of amaretto extract for every 2 tablespoons of amaretto liqueur โ that shows you how strong amaretto extract is!
Plus, substituting it for the liqueur in bakes makes your dish free of alcohol as the content in the extract will evaporate when you bake with it!
Otherwise, start with about ยฝ a teaspoon for general flavoring, then slowly add more until you get your desired taste โ remember, a little goes a long way here!
3 great recipes to use your amaretto extract
With amaretto providing such a unique flavor, you can use it in both recipes that call for amaretto extract and recipes that call for almond extract, as amaretto extract may be a delicious substitute:
- Cherry amaretto ice cream: Not only is this ice cream delicious, but itโs dairy-free as well! It uses real blended cherries and coconut milk to create an amazing dessert that youโll have trouble putting down! The recipe creates an amaretto flavor using almond extract and some other ingredients, but you can simply replace the almond extract with amaretto extract to enhance the amaretto flavor even more!
- Almond flour pancakes: This recipe is great if you want to level-up your breakfast! These pancakes use almond flour to provide a nutty twist, and calls for almond extract to further enhance the taste. However, you can substitute it for amaretto extract to create a slightly new flavor profile!
- Almond flour cake: This cake boasts delicious almond and vanilla flavors โ and with amaretto extract, you can add a delicious twist to this great recipe! I recommend keeping the almond extract it calls for, and adding the same amount of amaretto extract in addition. This way, you get extra almond flavor with some unique undertones!

It has an awesome flavor thatโs powerful and tasty, and matches the deliciousness of the other extracts on this list. Ingredients: Natural amaretto flavor (flavor contains vegetable glycerin).
Otherโs we reviewed
With the many great amaretto extracts come some not-so-great onesโฆ
LorAnn, for example, is a brand thatโs extremely popular โ and for good reason, as they make some great flavoring agents!
However, their amaretto extract isnโt an extract at all โ itโs actually an emulsion, which just means that itโs water based instead of alcohol based. Now, thatโs not a bad thing at all, and mainly just makes changes in the boiling points โ the flavor in emulsions doesnโt get as baked-out as the flavor in extracts does.
The bad thing about LorAnnโs amaretto flavoring product is that it uses artificial flavors, which we at Coconut Mama donโt support. Why get something fake, when the real thing is so much better? Therefore, we donโt recommend LorAnn in this case, but we encourage you to take a look at the many great options in the rankings above!
