Taylor Farms recalled iceberg lettuce distributed to Walmart, restaurants and foodservice businesses, but its familiar salad kits remain on store shelves. That apparent contradiction has added to the confusion surrounding the Taylor Farms lettuce recall.
The simple explanation is that recalls apply to particular ingredients, farms, facilities and production lots—not every product made by the company named in the announcement.
The recall is limited to iceberg lettuce from one region
Taylor Farms de Mexico initiated the recall July 17 after federal investigators connected shredded iceberg lettuce from the company’s central Mexico operation with a multistate Cyclospora outbreak.
The company removed iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico that was distributed from June 29 through July 16. Affected products have best-if-used-by dates extending through August 3.
The FDA’s official Taylor Farms recall notice lists every recalled product, package size and date.
The recall does not include every vegetable processed by Taylor Farms, every facility the company operates or every farm supplying it.
Taylor Farms says no Taylor Farms-branded retail products are included. It has also specifically said its branded salad kits do not contain iceberg lettuce.
Most Taylor Farms kits use combinations of romaine, cabbage, kale, broccoli stalks, cauliflower and other vegetables. The affected ingredient was iceberg lettuce moving through a particular supply chain in central Mexico.
A salad kit is not the same as every bagged salad
The wording requires one important distinction.
Taylor Farms sells salad kits containing greens, dressing and toppings in one package. It also sells simpler salad blends, shredded lettuce and individual salad bowls.
Some Taylor Farms-branded products outside the kit category do contain iceberg lettuce. The company’s Garden Salad, American Blend and Shredded Iceberg Lettuce are examples.
Nevertheless, Taylor Farms says none of its branded retail products were made with the recalled central Mexico lettuce. A product can contain the same type of vegetable without coming from the affected farm, lot or processing operation.
That is why consumers should not assume every package containing iceberg lettuce is recalled—or that every Taylor Farms product is involved.
Why Marketside lettuce was included instead
The retail products identified in the recall were sold under Walmart’s Marketside label.
Affected products include Marketside Iceberg Salad in 12- and 24-ounce packages and Marketside Shredded Lettuce in 8- and 16-ounce packages. The recalled bags have best-if-used-by dates from July 18 through August 3.
This is an example of private-label manufacturing. Taylor Farms can process or package food that is ultimately sold under a retailer’s name instead of its own.
In this case, the affected retail lettuce carried a Marketside label, while the Taylor Farms-branded products shoppers recognize came through different supply chains.
The Mexican facility stopped production
Taylor Farms initially suspended distribution of iceberg lettuce from the affected region. The company later said it had temporarily stopped production at its central Mexico facility while outside experts reviewed the operation’s food-safety systems.
That broader shutdown does not automatically expand the recall. A facility may stop production as a precaution without every item previously produced there being recalled.
Taylor Farms also said it would not source iceberg lettuce from central Mexico for the remainder of the growing season.
What shoppers should actually check
Consumers do not need to discard a Taylor Farms salad kit simply because it carries the company’s name.
Instead, check three things:
- Is it one of the recalled Marketside iceberg products?
- Does its package size match the FDA’s list?
- Does its best-if-used-by date fall between July 18 and August 3?
If all the information matches, do not eat the lettuce. Discard it or return it for a refund.
The recall is serious, but it is not companywide. It covers a defined supply of iceberg lettuce—not every salad, vegetable or kit connected with Taylor Farms.
