Factories across the country are closing.
(Even in super business-friendly states.)
And unfortunately, Iowa isn’t immune.
In fact, two separate plants closed earlier this Summer, with 461 jobs eliminated.

Both plants were operated by Hy-Vee, the grocer – a commissary in Ankeny commissary and the Chariton fresh produce prep facility.
Unlike seemingly the vast majority of plant closures, these Hy-Vee shutdowns appear to have been less about the overall economic malaise and more about de-centralizing operations so stores can deliver fresher goods (including sandwiches).
This reversal (from more to less centralized) means new jobs at Hy-Vee stores offered to every person whose job was eliminated at the commissary and the prep facility.
So it’s change – and change can be hard – but at least everyone who wants to continue at Hy-Vee can do so. That’s better than most closure situations!
Now,in all fairness, the food industry writ large is still under pressure from an incredibly difficult combination of circumstances – tariffs, supply chain snarls, and consumer price sensitivity – and so we can reasonably expect to see more closures.
It’s a tough time, for sure.
