The nationwide economic slowdown has certainly come for Michigan.
It has already suffered a string of factory closures this year tied to the trade war…
(Michigan is heavily exposed to trade with Canada, so Canadian retaliation is particularly harming the state economy.)
And unfortunately, the trouble keeps piling up.

Michigan is now losing another three factories tied to the all-important food industry:
- The Utz chips/pretzels factory in Grand Rapids
- The PepsiCo manufacturing facility in Detroit (some non-manufacturing operations like warehousing and sales will continue)
- Conagra’s pie-filling plant in Fennville
These aren’t small companies – these are major brands that are reducing their manufacturing capacity in response to slumping demand. This is a clear warning about the state of the US economy – and we would all do well to heed it.
