Intro

If you haven’t tried Wegmans yet, and you live in one of these five lucky towns, you’re in for a real treat.
Wegmans is possibly THE best grocery store in the world.
(Not that I’m biased.)
Certainly their store-prepared food is the best – where else can you get sushi, burgers, Naan pizza, poke, and more all under one roof?
And these five towns are about to get to experience the full delight of Wegmans…

Where Wegmans is growing

Watching Wegmans’ expansion strategy over the last several years, it’s been clear for some time to me that they’ve been making a two-pronged play:
Prong #1: More beachheads in more places, particularly as Wegmans continues to expand further south down the Eastern Seaboard.
Prong #2: More “infill” locations in places where they’ve already established a beachhead. (Think: Suburbs of cities which already have a Wegmans, that sort of thing.)
So which lucky towns are about to get their own Wegmans? Let’s hop right in…

#1: Lake Grove, New York

As if there weren’t enough Wegmans stores in New York already!
Just kidding – the nearest one on Long Island is all the way over in Brooklyn, so this soon-to-be-opened location will be a big upgrade!

#2: Norwalk, Connecticut

Wegmans has a planned store in Norwalk, which would make its first location in the state.
Currently the closest Wegmans is actually just over the New York border in West Harrison, so this expansion is much-needed!

More on the new Wegmans in Norwalk

Norwalk’s Wegmans will have all the traditional awesomeness that makes Wegman’s an amazing store, for sure.
But it will also have a few special additions, namely:
– a 551-parking space deck
– which will have solar canopies (!)
– and 12 Tesla charging stations!
It’s a smart way to use their location to become even more of a destination.
And speaking of destinations, our next Wegman’s is in:

#3: Rockville, Maryland

Rockville is getting its very own Wegmans in the near future, near Rockville Pike and Halpine Road.
This will be the ninth location in Maryland.

#4: Charlotte, North Carolina

North Carolina has been a big expansion area for Wegmans, which is growing its footprint from its current four stores to six in the near future.
Charlotte, with its 900,000+ population and lots of great jobs, is a natural fit.

Wegmans’ strategy on full display

And again – looking at Wegmans’ expansion strategy, you can see exactly how a place like Charlotte would fit into it.
Build a Wegmans in a big city, see how it does in the market (especially important in Charlotte because there’s a lot of brand loyalty to Harris Teeter), then prepare to open several more in the area.
Classic beachhead for Wegmans.

#5: Holly Springs, North Carolina

Holly Springs is probably not a name you’ve heard unless you’re a local, but it’s a suburb of Raleigh.
And as Wegmans expands from the denser cores of Raleigh and Chapel Hill into suburbs like Morrisville, Holly Springs is a natural fit.

Summary

So there you have it – five lucky places getting a new Wegmans!
Three – Lake Grove, Rockville, and Holly Springs – all what I would consider “infill” locations in areas where Wegmans has already shown it can prosper, and two – Charlotte, Norwalk – really emblematic of its “beachhead” expansion strategy.
It’s exciting to watch.
And with that in mind, one big question for you:

Where do YOU think Wegmans should open up next?

Update: Woah, so many responses! Thank you! I’ve included several of the more intriguing ideas on the next slide…

Readers sound off

We asked, and you answered, with great ideas like:
– Asheville, NC (I agree, it makes a lot of sense as a natural area since Wegmans is already operating in the state)
– Southern Delaware (currently the only Wegmans is in Wilmington – my guess is they’ll expand there before going further south, but I could be wrong)
– Nashville (probably further down the line for them)
– Fishers, Indiana (I bet they try Indianapolis and Carmel first if they decide to push into the Midwest)
Keep them coming!
