If you haven’t heard by now about the announced FDA ban on synthetic dyes, then you’ve probably been living under a rock.
It’s a big deal with big impacts for big names – and while the ban is voluntary (at least for now), pressure is certainly ramping up for companies to get in compliance.

(And while we’re focusing here on candy, there are actually a LOT of foods that contain these banned dyes.)
These five iconic candies will all have to change their recipes to get on board:
- Skittles
- M&Ms
- Mike and Ikes
- Airheads
- Starbursts
Most companies have bent the knee (although Mars so far has not, surprisingly enough), but there’s certainly still a long time (through the end of 2026 in most cases) for these recipes to change.

What do you think of the synthetic dye ban? A smart investment in American health, government overreach not backed by the science, or something else? Let us know in the comments!
