Intro

Yeah, yeah, yeah, we’ve heard the all insults on McDonald’s burgers.
About the quality of the beef, the thinness, the claim that breakfast is the only good part. Or the fries.
But even haters have to admit there are worse burgers out there…

A Defense of McDonald’s Burgers

Confession: I like a regular old McDonald’s hamburger (you may prefer the larger Quarter Pounder).
But even if you don’t, you have to admit the Big Mac is a pretty iconic American creation.
Here’s the proof: The number of high-end restaurants that make their own version featuring two patties, special sauce, lettuce cheese, pickles, onions, and a sesame-seed bun and a new name.
I’ve seen names range from the Business Man (notice the same initials) to a French restaurant calling theirs “Le Burger Americain.”

Sonic

I wanted to like Sonic. I swear!
Love the variety of choices (Fritos chili cheese wrap, corn dogs, tater tots!) and the carhop aesthetic.
But the food in general and the burgers in specific are just not good.
Sorry.

White Castle

I mean, the meat is gray.
At one point, I craved these tiny sliders as a novelty, but it doesn’t hold up to multiple eatings.
And, again, look closely at the meat. Steamed or not…kinda gross.

Hardee’s/Carl’s Jr

Hardee’s had an argument back in the true Thickburger days, but now its burgers are just nostalgia for people who remember the glory days.
If McDonald’s skeeves you out, you may not want to step into a Hardee’s or its sibling hamburger slinger, Carl’s Jr.

Freddy’s

Freddy’s should be better than it is.
It’s got the old-school charm and tries to be comparable to In-N-Out or Five Guys.
But the burgers and fries don’t hold up.

Jack in the Box

Like Sonic, Jack in the Box has a dizzying selection.
While it has its late-night fans (and fans of its prices), the size of the menu dilutes the quality of the individual items.
And that includes the burgers.
