Intro

M&Ms has been through…a LOT of flavors over the years.
Like, as of right now there are about 60 worldwide, and obviously that doesn’t count all the discontinued ones that aren’t currently active.
And while some discontinued flavors have real hope of return (including one that, after a decade of fan pressure, is finally back on shelves!)…
Fact is, the vast majority of these discontinued flavors are gone for good.

Intro (continued)

It’s a shame, but that’s life.
I’ve gathered seven pretty interesting flavors that didn’t stand the test of time and included them below.
Which is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!
Starting with probably the weirdest one of the bunch…

Jalapeno peanut

Timeline: Introduced and discontinued in 2019.
The story: The jalapeno peanut M&Ms were part of a competition Mars hosted where they introduced new flavors and had fans vote on their favorite. Jalepno peanut didn’t win.
Tasting notes: If you’ve ever had spicy pad thai, you know that peanut + spicy can be an awesome combination.
If you’ve ever had Mexican hot chocolate, you know that chocolate + spicy can be a great pairing.
If you’ve ever had a Reese’s peanut butter cup, you know that chocolate + peanut tastes fantastic.
So why not put them all together in one?

Toffee peanut

Timeline: Introduced in 2019; unclear when discontinued, but not available today.
The story: Toffee peanut M&Ms were the winners of the 2019 Mars international flavor competition, and you can guess why!
Tasting notes: Just such a great flavor combination – the sweetness of toffee and chocolate paired with the salty peanut was just perfection.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve begun to really appreciate balanced flavors instead of all sweet or all salty, and this M&M delivered the goods!

Raspberry

Timeline: Raspberry M&Ms had a good run for several years before being discontinued in 2014, and they (unfortunately) haven’t been back since!
The story: This one was pretty straightforward: An appeal to people looking for healthier candy (the base was dark chocolate, not milk chocolate), and obviously the combination of fruit and chocolate is always a strong one.
Tasting notes: Sour + sweet is a great combination! The raspberry flavor was pitch-perfect, not too strong. Also, the colors were fun – purple, fuchsia, and pink.

Red velvet

Timeline: These were introduced in 2014 and discontinued after a fairly short run. And they haven’t been back since!
The story: These were a Wal-Mart exclusive for Valentine’s Day in 2014, and they were announced as a limited-run…so it’s no surprise they didn’t stand the test of time.
Tasting notes: Red velvet is really just a richer chocolat flavor, and I loved that these M&Ms did a pretty good job of living up to it.
Plus, they looked festive – always a plus!

Toasty vanilla and white chocolate M&Ms

Timeline: These were introduced in 2023 as a winter holiday seasonal flavor, and they were discontinued once the holiday season was over.
The story: I don’t think these were ever meant to last, just to juice up sales with “different enough” flavor and branding.
Tasting notes: I’m really not a fan of white chocolate M&Ms, so I came in prepared to hate these.
(Especially because vanilla is usually a pretty bland flavor.)
I won’t say that I loved them, but I was pleasantly surprised that they didn’t just overdue the sweetness. I’d try them again if they ever returned.

Candy apple

Timeline: Released in 2014 (part of a broader product refresh by Mars).
The story: The idea (I think) was for these to tap into that broader nostalgia around candy apples and Fall festivals. They didn’t last terribly long, which probably tells you all you need to know.
Tasting notes: They had kind of that Jolly Rancher apple taste with a hint of caramel sweetness.
If you were looking for an “authentic” flavor, you were probably disappointed.
But let’s face it – it’s M&Ms, it’s just about “does it taste good?”
And the answer for these was definitely yes.

White chocolate carrot cake

Timeline: These were introduced in 2013 for Easter and stopped at the end of the season.
The story: This was another Wal-Mart exclusive, intended to fill shelves for a limited time and then quietly fade away.
Tasting notes: Too much white chocolate, too sweet in general. This is one I won’t be missing, although it sure was festive!
Of course, as I mentioned at the top, there’s one discontinued flavor coming back…although it’s got a bit of a twist…

Peanut butter and jelly

Mars is actively selling peanut butter and jelly M&Ms for the first time in nine years (they were introduced in late 2024 after having been off shelves since 2015).
But there is a change:
When they were originally introduced in 2009 in tandem with a Transformers movie, the jelly part was strawberry flavored; now it’s more of a mixed berry.
Regardless, great to see a flavor come out of the vault!

Summary

So there you have it – seven discontinued M&M flavors I don’t expect to come back anytime soon (if ever)…
But hey! At least PB&J is back, right?
Which of course brings me to two important questions…
