91-year-old grocery chain announces more store closures in California

A longtime West Coast grocery chain is continuing to shrink its footprint, announcing two additional store closures in Northern California. The latest shutdowns bring the number of Raley’s locations closing across California and Nevada to six, giving shoppers in several communities a new reason to find another grocery store.

Two more California stores will close

Raley’s announced that its Petaluma and Brentwood, California, stores will permanently close. The Petaluma location at 157 N. McDowell Blvd. is scheduled to close January 26, 2027, while the Brentwood store at 2400 Sand Creek Road is expected to close November 3, 2026.

The Petaluma closure will affect approximately 48 workers, according to local reporting. Raley’s said it plans to offer transfer opportunities to as many affected employees as possible.

Six stores affected

The two latest closures add to a series of shutdowns involving Raley’s and its affiliated grocery banners. The company has also closed or announced closures involving stores in Roseville, Antioch, and Elko, Nevada, as well as Nob Hill Foods locations in Los Gatos and Mountain View.

The closures are part of decisions the company says are based on individual store performance rather than a broad plan to abandon physical grocery stores. The total count of stores set to close by early 2027 is currently at six.

Raley’s cites changing shopping habits

Raley’s said the closures were driven by local market conditions and the long-term financial sustainability of the individual locations, while also citing increased competition from online marketplaces and changing consumer preferences. The company said the closures are not part of a larger downsizing effort. 

Despite the closures, Raley’s is still expanding in some markets. The company plans to open a new store in Madera, California, in March 2027, signaling that it is shifting its footprint rather than abandoning expansion altogether.

For customers in Petaluma and Brentwood, however, the announcements mean the loss of two familiar neighborhood grocery stores. The closures will leave affected employees looking for new opportunities while shoppers adjust to changes in their local grocery landscape.
