Making your own hot sauce is a piece of cake! It’s as simple as sautéing your favorite peppers with onions and garlic, then blending the mix with apple cider vinegar, sugar, and salt + pepper. The amounts of each ingredient can be adjusted to fit your personal flavor preferences.
Apple cider vinegar is a key ingredient to this recipe, as it adds a unique zest and bite. Not only is it a great flavor addition, it also work as a natural preservative. This allows your homemade hot sauce to be enjoyed for weeks longer when stored in the fridge – if it lasts!
Apple cider vinegar is also packed with probiotics which are good for your gut health. There are claims that apple cider vinegar can help smooth skin tone and cure a sore throat, as well. It’s a multi-purpose magic elixir!

Ingredients
There are only six main ingredients to this hot sauce! The last addition of salt + pepper makes this one of the easiest sauces to whip up!
Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is excellent to use when sautéing veggies. It is full of medium-chain triglycerides which are more easily digested by the body when compared to other oils.

Onion: Any type of onion will work in this recipe and will only change the flavor slightly. We love the flavor of red onions so picked that one for our hot sauce.
Garlic: Garlic is a must in almost every savory recipe. It adds complexity to the tang of the peppers and onion, creating a beautiful flavor profile.
Jalapeño Peppers: Jalapeños make a wonderfully spicy sauce, which compliments so many dishes. Tacos, fish, rice bowls, cornbread – you name it! But don’t be afraid to use a different pepper if you prefer the flavor of another. Habaneros would be amazing! Just keep in mind that they are about half the size of jalapeños, so you’ll need to use double the amount.
Apple Cider Vinegar: If the peppers are the star, apple cider vinegar is the essential supporting actor. This sauce just wouldn’t work without it! Apple cider vinegar adds the right amount of moisture and zing, allowing the flavor of the peppers to shine. Since it is made from apples, its sweet and fruity essence compliments the heat and enhances the overall taste.
Maple Syrup or coconut sugar: A small bit of sweetness ebbs the sting of acid from the other ingredients while still promoting the spicy flavor.
Salt + Pepper: The essential flavor enhancers, salt + pepper round out this delectable sauce.
Water (optional): Depending on how thick you like hot sauce, the apple cider vinegar may be all the liquid you need. However, if you prefer a runnier sauce, slowly drizzle water into the blender until it has the right fluidity.
How to make apple cider vinegar hot sauce
Step One: Heat 1/2 tablespoon of coconut oil in a pan over medium heat.

Step Two: Add onion, garlic, and peppers to the pan and sauté until the peppers are soft (5-7 minutes). Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.

Step Three: Transfer the sautéed veggies into a blender, then add the apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, and salt + pepper. Blend for 1 minute. If desired, drizzle in a bit of water to make the sauce runnier.
Step Four: Cool completely then pour into a jar or bottle and store in the fridge. It will keep up to 2 months. Douse on top of every dish!
Flavor variations
Habanero – Switch the jalapeños for habaneros. You will need double the amount of habaneros to match the same amount of jalapeños. But beware – they’re even spicier!
Jalapeño-Cilantro – Toss in 1/4 cup of cilantro during Step Three for a burst of herby flavor!
Tips
Wash you hands thoroughly after cutting the jalapeños. Don’t touch your face until you do so!
If you’d like less heat from the peppers, remove the seeds and pith before dicing and sautéing. The pith contains the highest concentration of spice.
To achieve a very smooth sauce, strain through a sieve after blending.
If the hot sauce separates while in the fridge, simply give it a shake to remix.
