Beloved Arizona Italian restaurant closes for good after 24 years in business

Another longtime neighborhood restaurant has quietly served its last meal, marking the end of an era for loyal customers who made it a favorite gathering place for more than two decades.

Bell’ Italia, a family-owned Italian restaurant in Phoenix’s Ahwatukee neighborhood, has permanently closed after 24 years, leaving regulars to say goodbye to a local staple known for its East Coast-style pizzas, pasta dishes and welcoming atmosphere.

Family-owned restaurant built a loyal following

Bell’ Italia opened in 2002 at the corner of Chandler Boulevard and 48th Street, where owner and chef Mario Caputo built the restaurant around family recipes and a community-focused dining experience. Over the years, the restaurant became known for its handcrafted pizzas, Italian comfort food, Thursday pasta specials and gluten-free menu options.

Following Caputo’s unexpected death in 2021, his family continued operating the restaurant, preserving the neighborhood destination that many residents had supported for years.

Closure confirmed after weeks of uncertainty

For several weeks, a “temporarily closed” sign remained posted at the restaurant, leading many customers to wonder whether it would reopen. Staff members later confirmed that the closure had become permanent, while the restaurant’s website was updated with a brief farewell message thanking customers for their support. No additional explanation for the decision has been announced.

Part of a changing restaurant landscape

Bell’ Italia joins a growing list of Valley restaurants that have recently closed their doors as operators continue to navigate rising costs and changing consumer habits. Other notable June closures included the original Native Grill & Wings in Tempe, Kobe Japanese Steakhouse, and 12 West Brewing’s flagship Mesa location.

For longtime customers, however, Bell’ Italia’s closure represents more than the loss of another restaurant—it marks the end of a neighborhood institution that served Ahwatukee families for nearly a quarter-century.
