A long-time Bethesda staple is preparing to shut its doors after more than four decades in the community. A beloved family-owned Mexican restaurant announced it will close later this month, ending a 45-year run that made it a local favorite for generations of diners.

Tia Queta has been known for its classic Mexican dishes, warm atmosphere, and loyal customer base. The restaurant became a go-to spot for families, students, and longtime Bethesda residents who praised its consistent food quality and welcoming service. Roberto Montesinos, Tia Queta’s owner, opened the restaurant in 1980. Then, in the early 1990s, the building’s then- landlord offered to sell the building to him and his wife due to illness. Montesinos said in a 2019 interview that there was no way he could afford the rent present day had he not owned the building.

The restaurant’s announcement came in early January 2026, confirming that Tia Queta will permanently close on January 31. The news sparked an outpouring of support and sadness from customers who shared memories of the restaurant on social media and in community groups.
