Coconut milk tea is a delicious and refreshing beverage that has been gaining popularity in recent years. It’s made with creamy coconut milk, tea leaves and other sweet flavors that make it a truly unique drink. Not only does this drink taste great, but it also provides plenty of health benefits too! In this article, I’ll share how to make coconut milk tea, with variations on also share tips on how to make boba at home.
What Is Coconut Milk Tea?
This popular tea is popping up at coffee shops everywhere. Typically, this creamy coconut tea is iced and served with boba pearls. You can change up the recipe and leave the boba out if you prefer, but I always enjoy add ing black tapioca pearls to my iced teas and coffees.
How To Make Coconut Milk Tea
For this recipe you will need one cup of brewed tea, I used coconut tea, but you can use black tea or green tea. You will also need 1/3 cup of coconut milk, 1/4 cup cooked tapioca pearls and optional vanilla extract and sweetener.
Start by brewing your tea of choice. Bring one cup of water to a simmer and pour it into a cup with your teabag. Allow the tea to seep according to instructions for that type of tea. Once the tea has steeped, place it in the refrigerator to cool.
Next, cook the boba pears. There are several different brands of boba pearls and all have different cooking directions. I suggest you follow the package directions for best results. After the boba has cooked, let it rest in cold water before moving to the next step.
Once you’ve cooked your boba, you will add the boba to your serving cup. Top the boba pearls with raw honey (or sweetener of choice). Then, top the boba pearls with ice cubes, followed by the brewed tea and topped with the coconut milk. Mix everything together with a straw (preferably a boba straw) and enjoy!
Ingredients, Tips & Variations
Boba Pearls – These are an optional ingredient and can be left out of the coconut milk tea. You can make tapioca pearls from scratch with tapioca flour, or purchase them online from amazon.
Choose your favorite teas – I like several different teas and have tired this recipe with many. My favorite combination was with an herbal coconut tea that I purchased from Mountain Rose Herbs. You can use tea bags or loose tea for this recipe.
Coconut Milk – I used canned full fat coconut milk for this tea recipe. You may use lite coconut milk, or use other types of milk or cream like heavy cream, almond milk or oat milk if you prefer. (If you want to win extra points for DIYing, you can also make your own coconut milk!)
Honey – You may use other sweeteners like stevia, maple syrup or granulated sugar. I’ve used coconut sugar, which gave the boba a brown sugar flavor I’ve tasted from commercial boba tea packages I’ve tried.
Iced or hot – This tea tastes great iced or hot. I personally enjoy boba served as an iced tea, so that’s how I usually serve it.
FAQ
Yes, simple syrup (or coconut simple syrup) is a great substitute for honey in this coconut tea milk recipe.
Yes, any tapioca pearls will work in this recipe. The flavors will be slightly different, but I like both types of pearls.
I wouldn’t recommend using coconut water in place of coconut milk since it’s not a thick or creamy drink.
