Bad news for ice cream lovers – Dairy Queen has shuttered 37 locations across Texas.
(As if the recently-discovered critical vulnerability in America’s dairy supply chains wasn’t bad enough.)
These all center around one franchisee, Lone Star DQ, which closed the locations in two waves – first 25 in February, and then 12 more at the end of March.

KETK did some smart investigative reporting and discovered that DQ had been threatening to terminate Lone Star DQ’s franchise rights if they didn’t bring their restaurants up to snuff.
It seems we can safely assume that did not happen. Lone Star owned 38 franchised Dairy Queen’s at the time, so we may soon unfortunately see another closure.
Unfortunately, even leaving aside the franchise-specific issues…it’s harder than ever to operate a restaurant. The triple-play of higher labor costs, higher food costs, and people being nervous about spending money given the weakening economy is hitting restaurants where it hurts.
And given Texas’ very specific and well-publicized economic issues as retail spending declines…we can all probably be confident that there are lots more restaurant closures incoming.
with these Dairy Queens closed, where are you getting ice cream these days? Leave a comment and let us know!
