Florida’s restaurant industry is facing another turbulent year as several major chains continue closing underperforming locations nationwide. While not every brand has announced specific Florida shutdowns, industry analysts say the Sunshine State could see additional closures in 2026 as operators cut costs and restructure struggling businesses.
Casual dining chains under pressure
Several well-known casual dining brands have already reduced their national footprints, increasing the likelihood of more Florida closures ahead.
Dine Brands Global (parent company for Applebee’s and IHOP) has continued evaluating underperforming restaurants after franchise-related financial troubles affected dozens of locations across the country. Some Florida restaurants tied to struggling franchisees remain vulnerable.
Meanwhile, Darden Restaurants recently shuttered all remaining Bahama Breeze locations nationwide, including several in Florida. The move highlighted how even established chains are reassessing long-term profitability.
Fast food operators facing franchise struggles
Fast food brands are also dealing with mounting pressure from labor costs, inflation, and declining traffic.
Restaurant Brands International has seen some Popeyes franchise operators close stores after bankruptcy filings and debt issues. Florida, one of the chain’s largest markets, has already experienced multiple closures tied to franchise instability.
Pizza chains may also continue trimming weaker locations. Both Pizza Hut and Papa Johns have closed underperforming stores nationwide in recent years as delivery competition intensifies.
Rising costs continue reshaping the industry
Experts say Florida restaurants face a combination of rising insurance costs, higher wages, rent increases, and shifting consumer habits. Chains with aging dining rooms or weak sales volumes are especially at risk.
At the same time, stronger brands continue expanding into vacant restaurant spaces, signaling that Florida’s dining market remains competitive — but increasingly unforgiving for struggling operators.
