Bacardi is the most popular rum in the world – at least for now – and with good reason!
I think we’ve all been to plenty of great tropical-themed parties featuring Bacardi and lots of mixers.

Intro (continued…)

Competition is fierce!
Especially among dark rums.
I’ve collected a list of rums whose fans would claim they’ve lapped Bacardi.
Now, are they right?
Well, that’s for you to decide…
Starting with:

Don Papa

The price: $$$$
The pitch: Don Papa’s more expensive for sure, but it’s worth the price: The rum is aged for seven years in oak barrels.

Kraken

The price: $$
The pitch: Kraken has a beautiful full-bodied taste that really feels to me like what dark rum “should” taste like. It’s great mixed with Dr. Pepper or in rum balls.

Appleton Estate

The price: $$
The pitch: Appleton Estate distills the molasses for their rum in copper pots, which gives a beautiful profile of dark sugar and lots of honey. These rums were aged from 5-10 years depending on the bottle.

Havana Club

The price: $$$
The pitch: One of the better rums you can get for under $30, Havana Club is popular and known for its smokiness. A great sipping rum you can serve over ice.

Captain Morgan

The price: $$
The pitch: Captain Morgan is one of the most affordable and recognizable brands out there. As you know, it’s a spiced rum – which makes it fantastic for adding a little “something” extra to cocktails!

Myers’s Rum

The price: $$
The pitch: Myers’s is probably the most recognizable brand of dark rum aside from Bacardi – it’s ubiquitous. Go to any bar in the USA, and if they have a liquor shelf, Myers’s is there. You’ll love it for a little bit of heat as well as orange and molasses flavors – or just because it’s great with ginger beer!

Goslings

The price: $$
The pitch: Goslings Black Seal rum has a nice hint of root beer and sarsaparilla on the palate, and it’s a great rum for the price point.

And of course – Bacardi

I couldn’t leave without giving Bacardi its due. After all – it’s the most popular rum, and for good reason!
The price: $
The pitch: Among the big rum brands, I’ve gotta say that Bacardi has a fantastic mix of taste and affordability. It’s a great mixer and is clearly a step above your bottom-shelf rums. There’s a reason it rhymes with party!

Summary

So there you have it – seven dark rums whose fans would swear up and down they’ve got Bacardi beat.
And they make a fair set of points.
But here’s the big question:
