Panera has already faced customer complaints about its changing experience, but a new Reddit discussion focuses on something much smaller: an empty drink cup. For one customer, having to track down that cup was enough to defeat the purpose of ordering ahead.
In an October 7 Reddit post titled “Give me my freakin’ cup,” a customer said their Rapid Pick-Up food bag was waiting with a receipt showing a paid drink, but no cup. They said they then had to wait for an employee to appear behind the counter. The poster acknowledged concerns about stolen drinks but suggested placing the empty cup inside the food bag instead.

Why the missing cup is especially frustrating
Panera promotes Rapid Pick-Up as a way to order in advance and skip the usual wait. Its current Unlimited Sip Club webpage even tells customers who order ahead that their cup will be waiting on the Rapid Pick-Up shelf. That’s a clear expectation, especially for someone rushing to work or squeezing in a quick lunch.
But the other side of this complaint matters, too. Panera customers and self-identified employees have described drink theft and stolen pickup orders in earlier Reddit discussions. Some say their cafes moved cups or orders behind the counter to discourage people from taking items they hadn’t purchased. Those reports do not prove why the particular restaurant in Wednesday’s post withheld its cups, and they shouldn’t be mistaken for a confirmed nationwide policy.
Other customers offered a workaround
Not every response treated the situation as an unsolvable problem. One commenter suggested, “Just bring your own cup!” Another offered essentially the same advice, saying it would eliminate the wait for a disposable one.
That’s actually an option Panera recognizes. On its official website, the chain says customers can bring a clean reusable cup for eligible self-serve drinks at participating U.S. cafes, including Rapid Pick-Up orders. The cup must match the purchased beverage size, and the program excludes certain orders, including barista-made drinks and delivery.
Of course, bringing your own cup isn’t an answer for everyone. People may forget one, or they may reasonably expect the disposable cup included with their order. And employees dealing with missing drinks and busy counters have their own reasons to favor more controlled handoffs.
A small detail with a big effect on convenience
There’s an obvious middle ground: put the correct empty cup with a customer’s bag when feasible, or make it immediately clear where to collect it. Clearer pickup instructions could also prevent customers from wondering whether their order is really ready.
This is one customer’s account, not evidence that every Panera has the same problem. Still, the discussion illustrates a basic challenge for any restaurant selling convenience: if a customer orders ahead to avoid waiting, even an empty cup can become the thing that slows everything down.
