The power of strawberries
Sweet, sun-kissed strawberries are more than just a delicious snack. They can provide benefits from both inside and outside our bellies! Strawberries are high in antioxidants, vitamin C, and potassium (to name a few), which are all critical nutrients needed for healthy skin.
The power of strawberries is real! With its cache of vitamins and minerals, this lovely little berry:
- Improves skin texture by stimulating collagen production
- Brightens dark spots with its salicylic acid
- Protects the skin from UV damage
- Replenishes moisture from its antioxidants
In this Strawberry Scrub recipe, we use freeze dried strawberries instead of fresh. Freeze dried strawberries retain 90% of their original nutrients, meaning your skin will reap the benefits of this beautiful berry while your scrub earns a longer shelf life! Recipes using fresh strawberries are wonderful, but need to be refrigerated and used within a certain amount of days. Our recipe can last up to two months when stored in an airtight container and doesn’t need refrigeration.
Ingredients for strawberry sugar scrub
Cane Sugar – Besides being a physically grainy product, (essential for a scrub recipe), sugar also contains glycolic acid which is a natural exfoliant! The glycolic acid increases cell turnover for healthier skin. Sugar is also safe to use all over your body, from lips to feet.
Freeze Dried Strawberries – Freeze dried strawberries contain up to 90% of the nutrients compared to fresh strawberries! Using freeze dried rather than fresh also extends the shelf life of your scrub. These berries are packed with important nutrients and compounds to support healthy, glowing skin, like antioxidants, vitamins E & C, and salicylic acid.
Avocado Oil – Avocado oil is high in vitamins E and C which perk up aging skin and protect from UV damage. The fatty acids also provide a deep, natural hydration, boosting the skin’s elasticity.
Vitamin E Oil – Vitamin E oil is one of the best to incorporate into your beauty routine. It is both a humectant and emollient, which means it helps your skin absorb moisture and retain it. Vitamin E oil is also a natural preservative!
Essential Oils (optional) – To add another scent or an aromatherapy capability to the recipe, feel free to incorporate an essential oil. Oils like vanilla and lemon pair beautifully with the sugary scent. You can even use strawberry essential oil to intensify the berry aroma!
Variations
Ice Cream – Add 10-15 drops of vanilla essential oil for a super sweet-smelling scrub, like strawberry ice cream, yum!
Summertime – Add 10-15 drops of lemon essential oil to breathe in the citrusy scent of summer, every time you scrub.
Herbaceous – Add 1 tablespoon of dried basil to the scrub mix for an herby boost.
