Learn how to make homemade mouthwash that is easy to prepare and great for keeping your mouth healthy and fresh. This recipe includes natural ingredients like distilled water, baking soda, and essential oils that are proven to help fight bacteria and bad breath and is a great natural mouthwash alternative.

I love my mouthwash, but sometimes I run out or need something that is agreeable for my kids (they don’t particularly like alcohol-based mouthwash). This homemade mouthwash is my go-to, and it comes together quickly with a few ingredients I have in my kitchen cabinets!
How To Make Homemade Mouthwash
You’ll be surprised at how simple it is to make your own mouthwash! This recipe uses active ingredients, baking soda and xylitol, which are known to kill bad bacteria in the mouth and help prevent the enamel from deteriorating. In addition, essential oils add a pleasant taste to this mouthwash and also offer antibacterial properties to this natural mouth rinse.

Best Essential Oils To Use In Homemade Mouthwash
All essential oils have different antibacterial properties that are great for dental health. Below are my favorite essential oils and blends to use in this recipe:
- Tea Tree Oil: Use 4-8 drops of tea tree oil and mix well.
- Peppermint: Use 5-10 drops of peppermint essential oil in this recipe.
- Vanilla Peppermint: Add a few drops of vanilla extract and 4-6 drops of peppermint essential oil to the recipe.
- Cinnamon: Add 5-6 drops of cinnamon or cassia essential oils to the mouth wash.
Essential oils are not necessary to make this recipe, but they do add a nice flavor to the mouthwash. You can use peppermint extract instead of essential oils in this recipe as well.

Step-by-step Instructions:
- Mix the baking soda, xylitol, and salt into two cups of water.
- Mix well and add in the essential oils and optional mineral drops.
- Pour the mixture into a glass jar, mason jar, or glass bottle.
- Secure the homemade mouthwash with the lid and store it at room temperature.
How To Use:
- After brushing your teeth, rinse your mouth with homemade mouthwash.
- Swoosh the rinse around the mouth and spit into the sink.
- Repeat as needed and rinse your mouth with warm water afterward.

Use this and other natural products like homemade natural toothpaste or tooth powder.
