Let’s face it: Iowans needed some good news.
After Iowa lost several factories earlier this year…
And with the economy rapidly souring across the board…
It would have been nice to get a win.
Instead, another loss as TreeHouse Foods closes its non-dairy manufacturing facility in New Hampton.

That’s 48 people who just lost their jobs – not because of anything they did wrong, but simply because the company decided it was time to close the plant.
The logic, unfortunately, is inescapable – demand is falling across many food categories as the economy slows and Americans tighten their budgets. Plus, international demand is down as longtime trade partners abandon American goods in the wake of the trade war.
Add in the fact that food inputs are getting more expensive, we’re facing labor shortages (especially in food manufacturing), and – well – closures aren’t shocking at all.
But that’s cold comfort to the 48 Iowans who just lost their jobs.
I hope the next chapter is kinder to them than this one has been.
To that end – if you have any job leads or words of advice to share with these hardworking, newly unemployed Iowans – please leave a comment. We’re all in this together.
