Kansas is officially joining the growing group of states receiving their first Buc-ee’s. Construction is underway near Kansas Speedway, although drivers should be careful with any headline claiming an exact opening date.
The travel center is being built at 601 Village West Parkway in Kansas City, Kansas, just off Interstate 70 near the North 110th Street interchange. That places Buc-ee’s next to Kansas Speedway and close to Children’s Mercy Park, the Legends Outlets and one of the busiest visitor destinations in the state.
Plans call for a 74,000-square-foot store with 120 fueling positions, 12 electric-vehicle charging stations and at least 225 full-time jobs. The overall development has been valued at approximately $94.8 million.
The timeline has moved
Buc-ee’s broke ground in October 2025, with founder Arch “Beaver” Aplin III saying at the time that the company hoped to return for a ribbon cutting a little more than a year later. That pointed toward a late-2026 opening.
More recent reporting has pushed that back considerably. The Kansas City Star has reported that the project is now projected to open to travelers by fall 2027. Buc-ee’s itself has not announced a firm public date, and the company typically confirms one only when construction, hiring and inspections are far enough along.
Road construction shows the project is moving
The clearest current evidence is the infrastructure work surrounding the property.
The Interstate 70 entrance and exit ramps at North 110th Street closed on May 4 for roughly 90 days so crews could rehabilitate the overpass, widen the ramps and install new traffic signals. Those ramps and the overpass bridge were scheduled to reopen on August 2.
Village West Parkway itself has been closed since late January between Speedway Boulevard and Hollywood Casino Boulevard while crews rebuild the road and add a new roundabout. That closure is expected to last until late September.
That work matters because a Buc-ee’s can generate enormous traffic. The Kansas City location is expected to draw local shoppers, tourists visiting Village West and long-distance drivers crossing the state on I-70. Roads, turn lanes and interchange access must be ready before the store can safely open.
Construction schedules can also change because of weather, permitting, utility work and the pace of highway improvements. For that reason, Kansas residents should treat unofficial dates circulating online cautiously.
The safest timeline is that the store is actively under construction, with an opening currently projected for fall 2027 and an exact date still to be announced.
Why Kansas City makes sense
Buc-ee’s typically places its giant travel centers outside dense downtown areas but close to major highways and population centers. The Kansas Speedway site checks those boxes, sitting just northwest of the I-70 and I-435 interchange.
It also fills a geographic gap in the company’s growing Midwest footprint. Buc-ee’s already operates in Missouri, and the Kansas City store will give the chain a location directly on the Kansas side of the metropolitan area. I-70 can deliver travelers from both directions, including drivers headed toward Topeka, Lawrence, Columbia and St. Louis.
Kansas does not have to wonder whether Buc-ee’s is really coming anymore. The land is approved, construction has begun and road work is visible. What remains uncertain is the exact day the doors will open—and Buc-ee’s has not locked that down publicly yet.
