For more than two decades, it was the backdrop for birthday celebrations, graduation dinners and family nights out. Now, another longtime Arizona restaurant has quietly served its final meal.
Kobe Japanese Steakhouse in south Tempe permanently closed on June 27 after 22 years in business, announcing the decision just hours before shutting its doors for the last time. The sudden closure came as a surprise to many loyal customers who had made the hibachi restaurant a tradition for special occasions.
Last-minute announcement ends 22-year run
Located near Elliot Road and Hardy Drive, Kobe Japanese Steakhouse informed customers of its closure through a Facebook post on the day it closed.
“Last Call tonight, we will be closing after 22 years at 9 p.m. Thank you for all the support & memories over the years, and letting us celebrate special occasions with you,” the restaurant wrote.
The announcement gave regulars little opportunity to visit one last time before the restaurant closed its doors. Owners did not provide a reason for the closure or indicate whether the business might reopen elsewhere.
A favorite for celebrations
Throughout its 22-year run, Kobe Japanese Steakhouse built a loyal following with its teppanyaki-style dining experience, where chefs prepared steak, chicken, seafood and vegetables on a hibachi grill directly in front of guests. The restaurant also offered sushi, sashimi and specialty cocktails, making it a popular destination for birthdays, anniversaries and graduation celebrations.
Another longtime Valley restaurant closes
Kobe’s closure adds to a growing list of longtime Phoenix-area restaurants that have recently shuttered as the local dining landscape continues to evolve. While no explanation was given for the decision, the restaurant’s farewell message focused on thanking customers for more than two decades of support and the memories created around its hibachi tables. For many Tempe residents, the closure marks the end of a neighborhood favorite that had been part of family traditions for a generation.
