A Michigan community has lost a familiar grocery shopping destination as Kroger continues making changes to its store footprint. The closure also affects dozens of workers, according to a state workforce notice.
Kroger closes Flint Township grocery store
Kroger closed its store at 3288 Corunna Road in Flint Township, Michigan, on September 30, 2026, according to local reporting and a notice published by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. The location, identified as Store No. 404, served shoppers in Genesee County.
The state notice classified the action as a facility closure and listed 68 jobs impacted. The filing did not specify a reason for the closure. However, local reporting cited Kroger’s efforts to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs as factors behind the decision.
Affected employees offered transfers
The closure marks a change for employees who worked at the Corunna Road location., Kroger often offers affected employees the opportunity to transfer to other stores rather than lose their jobs outright.
The company operates other grocery stores in the Flint area, including a nearby location at 5249 Corunna Road near Dye Road.
The closure highlights how decisions involving individual grocery stores can affect both workers and shoppers, even when a retailer continues operating other locations in the same market.
Kroger continues to evaluate its store footprint
The Michigan closure comes as Kroger pursues broader changes to its retail operations. The grocery chain previously announced plans to close approximately 60 underperforming stores by the end of 2026, according to Grocery Dive.
The company operates thousands of stores across the United States, making individual location decisions part of a much larger retail network.
For Flint Township residents, the Corunna Road closure means finding another grocery destination. For the 68 workers identified in the state notice, the closure represents a significant employment change, although transfer opportunities may help some employees remain with the company.
