Intro

A weeklong boycott of McDonald’s over the company’s decision to scale back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies has ended with little to no visible impact. While McDonald’s may be facing challenges in other areas, it seems to be standing strong on this front. This move is also part of a larger trend among U.S. companies, as more businesses are rethinking their DEI strategies.

McDonald’s Shifts Approach to Diversity and Inclusion

Earlier this year, McDonald’s shared plans to change some of its diversity efforts. In January, the company said it would rename its diversity team to the “Global Inclusion Team” and scale back some of its DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs. The goal seemed to be avoiding the heated debates surrounding such terms. For months after the announcement, there wasn’t much reaction or controversy.

Grassroots Group Plans Boycott

Behind the scenes, groups had been quietly planning and organizing for a boycott. One of these groups, The People’s Union USA, a progressive grassroots organization, announced an “economic blackout” that would last one week and end on June 30th. John Schwarz, the founder of The People’s Union, shared the message on Instagram, saying, “Let them feel it. Let them hear us. This is just the beginning.

So then what happened?

The group likely did a good job organizing, and it’s possible many people avoided McDonald’s for a week. However, it doesn’t seem like it made much of a difference. Why? McDonald’s didn’t even respond to the effort. This is very different from their reaction to the FDA dye ban, where the company has been much more vocal and engaged.

McDonald’s Chose Silence and Moved On

There was no press release, no discussions, and no requests. McDonald’s simply chose to ignore the situation and move forward.

It Seems They Have Plenty of Company

McDonald’s isn’t the only big company stepping back from its past diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. Many other major brands, such as Target, Amazon, Facebook, Walmart, Lowe’s, Jack Daniel’s, and PepsiCo, have also made changes. Some have reduced their DEI programs, while others have removed them entirely as the topic has become more controversial.

McDonald’s Struggles to Keep Up with Gen Z’s Changing Tastes

McDonald’s is dealing with bigger challenges, especially when it comes to Gen Z. The generation following Millennials is changing the food industry in major ways. Fast food chains like McDonald’s are finding it tough to keep up because Gen Z’s preferences and habits are quite different from previous generations.

For example:

Gen Z eats out less often than Millennials did at the same age. They also care more about healthier and “crafted” food, which is the opposite of traditional fast food. Because of this, fast food doesn’t rank very high in value when Gen Z is surveyed. This has been a challenge for McDonald’s, even though the brand has managed to stay popular with teens and increase its share of their spending as of 2023.

But even more broadly…

The boycott against McDonald’s doesn’t seem to have had much impact so far. However, many Americans, especially Gen Z, see diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as a basic expectation for companies. By cutting back or getting rid of their DEI programs, McDonald’s risks damaging its reputation with these groups. While this specific boycott might not have made a big difference, in the long run, stepping away from DEI could be a problem for the company.

Summary

McDonald’s has decided to step back from its focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and so far, there don’t seem to be any immediate negative effects. However, some believe this move could hurt the company’s reputation in the long run, especially with certain groups, for starting the effort but not following through.
