Fresh off losing several businesses (including one that directly blamed the trade war), Michigan unfortunately is facing more bad news.
This time, two iconic brands – PepsiCo and Utz – are both shutting down factories.

Pepsi will be shutting down its Detroit manufacturing plant later this month, the latest in a string of nationwide closures that have left hundreds of workers unemployed and communities bereft of beloved local businesses.
Utz’s factory closure in Grand Rapids was announced last month and won’t take effect until the end of January 2026 – so at least workers get some time to try and find another job in the meantime.
Both companies are facing declining consumer demand for their core products, with a healthy dose of tariff-induced uncertainty and supply chain complications.
So they’re trimming where they can – which makes sense.
But it still stinks for the workers impacted – over 100 all told.
