Intro

If you’ve ever been to Chick-fil-A…
(And really, who hasn’t at this point?)
Then you know just how great their waffle fries are.
Crispy and thick, they are great for soaking up all that Chick-fil-A sauce (or honey mustard, or bbq sauce, or Polynesian sauce, or…well, you get the idea).
But let’s face it:

Intro (continued…)

Thanks to Chick-fil-A’s massive success…
(I mean, they’re running laps around KFC)
There are tons of other restaurants out there pushing waffle fries.
Many of whom have rabid fans who’d claim that they’ve beaten Chick-fil-A on its own home turf!

The big question

Are they right?
Well, that’s for you to decide.
So let’s hop right in with the very first of them, and one of my personal favorite alternatives:
Shutterstock
Smash Burger

Where they’re located: 35 states (and more to come), with a heavy concentration in their home state of Colorado.
All about the waffle fries: They’re sweet potato waffle fries! Which means they’re extra great with ketchup. Or dipped in a milkshake. (I recommend their peanut butter cookie shake for just this purpose.)

Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken

Where they’re located: Hangry Joe’s is in 24 states, with tons of locations in Virginia and Florida, and loads more coming online in the next year or so.
All about the waffle fries: Their waffle fries are crispy and delicious, as all waffle fries should be, but the REAL differentiator is that you can get them seasoned with honey butter, cheese, or Tostitos cheese. That combined with their delicious comeback sauce makes for a real treat!

Wooboi Hot Chicken

Where they’re located: Just in Northern Virginia for now, but you can tell it’s going places
All about the waffle fries: Delicious and crispy – and tossed in Wooboi’s mild rub, they’re delicious. Get them with the honey mustard or the mumbo sauce, and thank me later.

Applebee’s

Where they’re located: Applebee’s is in 49 states (sorry Hawaii) – generally anywhere there are a lot of people, you’ll find Applebee’s.
All about the waffle fries: I know, I can’t believe I’m saying this either – but it’s true! Applebee’s brew pub loaded waffle fries are actually amazing. Mostly because they’re smothered in cheese and bacon, and then there’s this great buttermilk ranch dressing that goes with them, too.

Carl’s Jr.

Where they’re located: 16 states, all (aside from Florida and Louisiana) west of the Mississippi.
All about the waffle fries: Carl’s Jr. waffle fries are no-frills, straight-up deliciousness. They’ve really nailed the crispiness – not soggy like lots of waffle fries, not burned.
Shutterstock
Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville

Where they’re located: Margaritaville is in 14 states, plus locations in Canada and several Caribbean islands (including Jamaica).
All about the waffle fries: Margaritaville’s waffle fries are made with sweet potatoes, and they’re absolutely delicious. See if you can convince your server to give you the chipotle aioli dipping sauce with them.
Shutterstock
Long John Silver’s

Where they’re located: Long John Silver’s is in 35 states, with lots of locations in Texas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, and West Virginia.
All about the waffle fries: They’re crispy and delicious – and they go great with Long John Silver’s bbq sauce!

And finally…Chick-fil-A

I couldn’t leave without giving Chick-fil-A some love. After all, they were my first waffle fry experience, and theirs are legendary for good reason!
Where they’re located: Chick-fil-A is in 48 states, with more being built seemingly every day.
All about the waffle fries: Thick and pillowy, with just the right amount of crunch – they’re great with Chick-fil-A’s plethora of sauces, but my favorite will always be their honey mustard.

Summary

So there you have it – seven restaurants apart from Chick-fil-A who can reasonably lay claim to the title of “best waffle fry.”
Each has their pros and cons.
But here’s the really big question:

What do YOU think?

Are these restaurants’ fans correct?
Have they edged out Chick-fil-A’s waffle fries?
Or does Chick-fil-A still reign supreme?
