They’re clearing heading upmarket with a lot of new stuff – new flavors, new dishes, new ideas!
I love to see it.

Intro (continued…)

A lot of these are flavors I feel like fans have been asking for for a long time.
They solve some real problems the Outback menu has had for years.
So I’m very excited to share all seven, starting with this first one:

#1: Filet with bourbon onion

I’ve always loved a good balance of sweet and savory, and Outback’s filet + onion dish promises it.
Here’s the thing: The onion is caramelized in Jim Beam bourbon, so you’ve got a nice sticky sweetness to it (in addition to the complex flavors of the onion itself).
That plus the roasted garlic butter on the steak is just perfection.
Plus, you get a potato and a side. (I’d do the Aussie fries, but that’s because I can never get enough carbs.)

#2: Filet with roasted garlic shrimp

Filet mignon and garlic shrimp is a great surf ‘n turf.
(I mean, it’s no lobster – but lobster is so expensive!)
Plus, of course, two sides.

#3: Blue cheese wedge side salad

I’ve always had a weakness for wedge salads – and obviously the combination of blue cheese crumbles and blue cheese dressing (plus bacon, tomatoes, red onions, a balsamic glaze, and – well, salad!) makes for an excellent all-around dish.

Let’s talk sides for a moment

Since I’ve been talking about steakhouse potatoes and sides, let’s just cover these briefly before moving on to the three remaining new dishes (one of which is an amazing dessert…).
As you’ve seen – most Outback Steakhouse meals come with two sides.
While technically they have one side as a steakhouse potato and one side as any other option, honestly in my experience they’re generally fine with you subbing in for both to be potatoes or other sides – it’s really just about what you want.

Breaking down the sides

Generally, Outback Steakhouse sides come in four categories:
– Steakhouse potatoes
– Classic sides
– Premium sides (upcharge)
– Soups and side salads (some of which come with an upcharge – others are free)
And one of the premium sides is new…

Steakhouse potatoes

There are four options, all free with a meal that includes a side:
– Baked potato (440 calories)
– Aussie fries (500 calories)
– Mashed potatoes (this is your low-cal option, at just 230 calories)
– Sweet potato (410 calories)

Classic sides

Just two classic sides, both for the health-conscious:
– Steamed mixed veggies (70 calories)
– Seasoned rice (290 calories)

Premium sides

These premium sides certainly up the quality of your meal, but for a price – they’re all $2.99 aside from the brussels sprouts, which are $3.99:
– Steakhouse mac & cheese (720 calories)
– Loaded mashed potatoes (320 calories)
– Asparagus (60 calories – obviously your healthy option)
– Over-the-top brussels sprouts (1,010 calories – and $3.99)
And finally…

Soups and side salads

These are a mix of free (with meal) and upsell options:
– House salad (190 calories, free)
– Caesar salad (260 calories, free)
– Blue cheese chopped salad (590 calories, $2.99)
– Baked potato soup (cup is 250 calories, free)
– French onion soup (420 calories, $3.99)

#4: Tasmanian chili

Outback’s Tasmanian chili is marketed, simply, as “spicy, all steak, no beans” – which is probably all you ever wanted in a chili, yeah?
Of course, it’s also topped with cheese and green onions.
This is everything you ever wanted or expected in a chili from Outback.
If you get it with a meal, a cup is an upcharge of $2.99.
Buy it on its own, and it costs $5.99 – with a bowl (or crock, as they call it) running you $7.99.

#5: Chimichurri filet

Chimichurri has always been one of my favorite sauces to pair with steak, as it brings a warm and spice-filled flavor without tipping over into “slathering my steak with butter.”
This one has come and gone a couple of times from my local Outback, so I was so glad to see it back!

#6: 3 cheese steak dip

If you love queso with a lot of meat and a few veggies, you’re gonna love this delicious new appetizer.
It’s a warm three-cheese dip with chopped steak, green onions, and diced tomatoes – served in a skillet with a plate of tortilla chips.
Just delicious.
But not as delicious as our final entrant:

#7: Koala punch for 2

This is kind of a fun treat – you mix lemonade, mango, and watermelon flavors with a healthy serving of Malibu pineapple rum and Bacardi. (They also top it with a little Koala that looks kind of like a rubber duck.)
I could do without the topper, but the drink itself is nice and festive!
Think of it kind of like a rum punch (which is what’s pictured).

#8: Tim Tam brownie cake

Tim Tams rank up there with marmite as essentially Australia’s national snacks…
But unlike marmite, they actually taste good!
And they’re even better when you put them on top of a three-layer cake featuring chocolate brownie, chocolate mousse, peanut butter, and caramel sauce.

Recent losses

Several excellent dishes have also unfortunately gone off-menu recently:
– The chocolate tower (kind of a “death by chocolate” style cake)…some locations seem to still have it, though. And the Chocolate Thunder from Down Under is still a thing!
– Bloomin’ French onion sirloin (sirloin topped with Bloomin’ onion petals – no idea why that one didn’t work, it tasted awesome)
– Bone-in ribeye with bourbon onion (swapped out for the filet, #1 on the list I just mentioned)
– Canberra chopped steak
Sad to see them go, but I’m hopeful for some returns!

Summary

So there you have it – seven new dishes from Outback Steakhouse that I’m so glad to see them incorporating in their menu!
As you can see, it’s a nice mix of new steaks, new sides, new appetizer, and new dessert – but really, it’s all just about new flavors.
But with all of that in mind, I have one question…
