Big changes are coming to SNAP courtesy of new regulations that took effect on Monday. (And if HHS Secretary RFK, Jr. gets his way, even more are coming.)
New SNAP restrictions put households with an estimated 800,000 children at risk of losing at least some of their benefits, according to an independent analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

The new restrictions? An onerous work requirement – any adult aged 18-54 receiving SNAP benefits must either work 20 hours a week (and prove it) or file paperwork proving that they are exempt from the requirement because of a disability or other issue. If someone doesn’t meet the requirements, they can only access SNAP benefits for three months every three years.
This potentially impacts children specifically because SNAP benefits are distributed at the household level – so if one adult in the house doesn’t file their paperwork on time, the household could suffer the consequences – including an estimated 800,000 children who could see their access to food impacted.
A wise policy to help get people back into the workforce, or government overreach with negative impacts for children? (Or some of both?) Share a comment and let us know what you think.
