Shoppers looking to stretch their grocery budgets may want to take a second look at where they buy store-brand staples.
A new price comparison found that Kroger edged out two retailers often associated with low prices—Walmart and Aldi—to offer the least expensive basket of private-label grocery essentials among the chains included in the study.
Kroger came out on top
The analysis, conducted by Restaurant Furniture Plus and highlighted by Allrecipes, compared the prices of 15 everyday store-brand products at Kroger, Walmart, Aldi and Albertsons. The shopping basket included common pantry and household staples such as eggs, sugar, milk, bread and canned goods.
Kroger posted the lowest total at $30.00, narrowly beating Walmart at $30.95. Aldi finished third with $33.15, while Albertsons had the highest total at $35.58.
Among the standout bargains, Kroger’s store-brand eggs were priced at $1.29 per dozen, while its four-pound bag of sugar cost $2.56, helping the chain secure the top spot.
What it means for shoppers
Although the difference between Kroger and Walmart was less than a dollar for the entire basket, those savings can add up over time for families who regularly purchase store-brand products.
The findings also challenge the perception that Aldi is always the lowest-priced option. While Aldi has built its reputation on value, this particular comparison found Kroger offered better prices on enough staple items to take first place.
Of course, grocery prices vary by region, weekly promotions and loyalty discounts, meaning individual shoppers may see different results depending on where they live and what they buy.
Still, the study serves as a reminder that comparing prices between retailers—and taking advantage of store-brand products, digital coupons and weekly sales—can help consumers save money even as grocery costs remain elevated.
