More rough news out of North Carolina –
After a string of factory closures earlier this year tied to the trade war…
North Carolina’s economy is unfortunately poised to suffer an additional blow.

More specifically, Packaging Corporation of America is closing its plant in Salisbury, at the cost of over 100 good local jobs.
This was just announced in a notice to the Salisbury city council, and the timing of the layoffs is heartbreaking: December 5th to 19th.
So 100+ locals will find themselves unemployed just in time for Christmas.
We’ve seen packaging factories all across the country shut down as the trade war wreaks havoc across the American economy and especially the US food sector.
Retaliatory tariffs and even outright boycotts of American products (and especially American crops) has caused widespread damage that has rippled up and down the food supply chain, all the way to reducing demand for food packaging.
And of course this is all happening on top of longstanding issues impacting the food sector – inflation, chronic labor shortages, supply chain complexity, old factories needing significant upgrades, and of course the shifts in American consumer preferences away from packaged foods.
Add it all together, and it’s no wonder packaging plants across North Carolina and America are closing.
That is, of course, cold comfort to the hardworking folks who are going to have to find a new job at Christmas.
