Intro

Outback is out with three fantastic new flavors, and I can’t wait to share them with you.
Because, let’s face it – although we’ve all got our longtime Outback favorites…
(Bloomin’ Onion, center-cut sirloin, coconut shrimp)
It’s always nice to branch out and try new stuff – especially when it’s this delicious.

But wait, isn’t Outback supposed to be shrinking its menu?

Yes, it’s true – Outback’s been having some trouble lately, and management is working on executing a turnaround.
Including plans to shrink the menu – details are sketchy, but we know probably 10+ items are on the chopping block. (I’ve noticed several sides disappearing.)
But let’s face it – you have to keep trying new stuff. The end of innovation is the beginning of the end for the brand.
So I’m glad to see Outback trying new stuff – and some of it looks quite delicious…starting with a fun take on a classic:

Fried mozzarella bloomerangs

Not a typo – they do call them “bloomerangs” – which I think is a pastiche of “boomerang” and “bloomin” (like Bloomin’ Onion).
They’re mozarella sticks, with two twists:
– First off, they’re shaped like (you guessed it) boomerangs!
– And second, they don’t just have typical boring mozzarella stick breading – they’ve got Bloomin’ Onion spices!
Just an all-around great treat.

Seared peppered ahi

Outback is known for its steaks (they’re in the name, after all) and also for its excellent seafood.
And from where I sit, the seared peppered ahi is destined to join the pantheon including longtime favorites like Gold Coast Shrimp.
It’s seared slies of ahi, served over mixed vegetables (cabbage, carrots, crispy noodles), plus a soy ginger sauce, wasabi, and two sides.
And when it comes to sides – you’ve got options.

Kinds of sides

Broadly speaking, Outback Steakhouse has four types of sides:
– Steakhouse potatoes (free)
– Classic sides (free)
– Premium sides (upcharge)
– Soups and side salads (some free, some upcharge)

Steakhouse potatoes + classic sides

Potatoes:
– Baked potato
– Aussie fries
– Mashed potatoes
– Sweet potato
And there’s only one classic side available right now, which is (boring) seasoned rice.

Premium sides

They’re a bit extra, but they’re worth it – each comes with a $2.99 upcharge:
– Steakhouse mac and cheese
– Loaded mashed potatoes (a few extra toppings on this one)
– Asparagus (the healthy option)

Soups and side salads

These are a mix:
– Standard house salad
– Caesar salad
– Blue cheese chopped salad ($2.99)
– Baked potato soup
– French onion soup ($3.99)
– Tasmanian chili ($2.99)
So, pick two sides that meet your needs, and let’s head on to our next new Outback dish…

Fried buttermilk chicken sammie

It’s not quite as simple as, like, a Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich, but this one’s pretty straightforward:
– Fried chicken
– Ranch
– Lettuce, pickles, tomato, onion
– Bun
Plus one side.
No need to mess with perfection, right?

Summary

So there you have it – three new dishes at Outback Steakhouse that are delighting longtime fans, especially this longtime fan!
My personal favorite? Probably the bloomerangs. Just the right amount of cheek and pun to them, you know?
But I’m curious – have you had the chance to try these? Any that you particularly love?
