Intro

To know Cracker Barrel is to love its delicious, down-to-earth food and traditional menu.
(Even if some of its menu items are…well…a little weird.)
Sadly, not every dish stands the test of time – although I do want to acknowledge and appreciate that they’ve made some great recent additions to their menu.

Intro (continued…)

It makes sense that Cracker Barrel has been streamlining its menu and focusing in on what it’s really good at – as store closings, inflation, and just all the headwinds facing chain restaurants continue to challenge Cracker Barrel.
Nonetheless, some of these losses are genuinely, truly disappointing.
Here are 10 discontinued menu items that I’m feeling particularly sad about:

#1: Roasted Sweet Glazed Chicken

This one was a lot of fun – a chicken roasted in a sweet tea glaze is just kind of a cool way to combine different things we all love.
Of course, the dish came with baked beans and corn on the cob, along with coleslaw and biscuits or corn muffins.
I’ll miss it – for the novelty if nothing else!

#2: Strawberries ‘n Cream French Toast

This was really more like a french toast dumpling – the bread was stuffed with cream cheese and strawberry syrup, then dusted with powdered sugar and sliced strawberries.
This was a seasonal menu item that sadly only ran for a couple of seasons almost a decade ago, but true Cracker Barrel fans will always remember it fondly.
(Cracker Barrel now offers a cinnamon swirl french toast breakfast, which is a nice consolation prize.)

#3: Smoky Beef Brisket Breakfast

This was one of Cracker Barrel’s “campfire meals” that, sadly, all went away back in 2018. (Although a few of them have fortunately returned…this unfortunately wasn’t one of those!)
These foil-wrapped creations were so reminiscent of meals I had while camping. (But let’s be honest, they were cooked a whole lot better.)
The smoky beef brisket breakfast had brisket, hash, eggs, Colby cheese, crispy onions, BBQ sour cream, and of course two biscuits.
Just fantastic. I still think about it from time to time.

#4: S’mores Latte

Ok, this wasn’t a food item, but the S’mores latte was a fun drink and had a good run while it lasted.
You got a little graham cracker and a lot of marshmallow and milk chocolate along with the espresso and steamed milk in the latte.
It tasted a lot like a real s’more – just a whole lot less mess and fuss!

#5: Baked Apple Dumplin’

This one was probably my favorite Cracker Barrel dessert – warm pecan streusel and apples in a short crust…with two scoops of ice cream on top.
That combination of warm and frozen was just amazing.
And at just $3.99, it was a total steal!

#6: Fried Chicken Liver

Honestly, I’m not gonna miss this one much.
Liver’s really not my thing.
(But it is for some people, and that’s great. I’m sorry Cracker Barrel doesn’t have it anymore.)

#7: BBQ Pork

Cracker Barrel used to have this amazing foil-wrapped bbq pork dish that would really knock your socks off.
Obviously the sauce was good – but also the baked beans, the chips, and the corn on the cob.
Really put you in the mood for a backyard barbecue.
But, like so many other great dishes, it’s gone.

#8: Beef Stew

I feel like beef stew is a quintessential comfort food.
Warm, filling, inexpensive, and just, well, comforting.
Cracker Barrel’s wasn’t particularly special, but it was good and a good value.

#9: Chicken Salad Sandwich

I don’t think there’s anyone who’s neutral on the question of chicken salad.
Right? Like, either you love it or you hate it.
Either the chicken salad you had was amazing, or it was the worst.
Anyway, Cracker Barrel’s was amazing, and it unfortunately disappeared all the way back in 2017.

#10: Blackberry cobbler

Blackberry cobbler is a perennial favorite of mine, because it’s just about as “traditional” a southern dessert as you get.
(I especially like it because blackberries just aren’t as sweet as other fruits – so you get that nice tartness to balance out the sweeter parts of the cobbler.)
Unfortunately, Cracker Barrel got rid of its blackberry cobbler years ago.
And while the peach cobbler is a pretty good consolation prize…it’s a lot sweeter!

Summary

So there you have it – ten Cracker Barrel dishes that sadly have disappeared.
And unfortunately I think there’s every reason to expect that, as Cracker Barrel focuses on updating its menu, more will change.
So here are two big questions for you:

What else should Cracker Barrel change?

Which discontinued menu items should Cracker Barrel bring back?
And which current menu items do you expect to disappear in the near future?
