A popular Dallas restaurant is preparing to close its doors after nearly a decade in business. The Deep Ellum eatery says prolonged construction and delays to a major street project have made it increasingly difficult to operate.
Zatar Lebanese Tapas & Bar is closing
Zatar Lebanese Tapas & Bar, located at 2825 Commerce St. in Dallas’ Deep Ellum neighborhood, plans to close by the end of August 2026.
The restaurant opened in December 2016, giving it nearly 10 years in the Dallas dining scene. Zatar became known for its modern take on Lebanese and Mediterranean cuisine, including hummus, baba ghanoush, chicken shawarma fries, and barbecue shawarma sandwiches.
Owner Sam Fawal, who acquired the restaurant in 2019, announced the closure in an August 7 social media post, thanking customers for supporting the business over the years.
Construction delays cited as major factor
According to the restaurant, ongoing construction and other challenges played a major role in the decision.
Construction on Commerce Street began in Fall 2024, but the project has experienced delays and is now expected to continue into January 2027. The prolonged work has created challenges for businesses along the busy Deep Ellum corridor.
Zatar’s closure adds to a growing list of businesses affected by changes and construction in the neighborhood. Local reporting says the restaurant is at least the sixth food-related business in Deep Ellum to close amid the area’s ongoing challenges.
Final days ahead
Although Zatar is closing its Deep Ellum location, the restaurant invites customers to return for one last visit before the doors close.
The final weeks are being positioned as a farewell to the customers who supported the restaurant throughout its run. Guests can still stop by for Lebanese food, drinks, and hookah before another Texas restaurant closes at the end of August.
