More bad news out of Florida (as if the Sunshine State needed any more)…
After a string of factory closures earlier this year, another iconic brand has thrown in the towel.
More specifically, Revlon is closing its factory on Overmyer Drive in Jacksonville, Florida.
The Jacksonville factory closure, which should wrap up next month, will result in a total of 127 layoffs per official documents.

This is a serious blow to Jacksonville – beyond the already painful job cuts – because Revlon is such a recognized brand and had a presence in the area for so long. The factory was built in the 1960s, so this represents the end of a decades-long relationship with a pillar of the local community.
Unfortunately, the age of the factory probably presents a clue as to why Revlon decided to make cuts in Jacksonville.
Think of all the technology that has been invented since then – tech that has improved efficiency, boosted production, and lowered costs.
That technology wasn’t part of the initial build for the Jacksonville plant, and while of course things can be shoehorned in, and upgrades are possible – over time those upgrades get incredibly expensive.
And given that Revlon only emerged from bankruptcy a couple years ago – and is facing unprecedented pressure across the beauty and cosmetics space – it makes sense that they could only do so much.
After all – the traditional heavyweights are increasingly being challenged by a group of upstarts as Americans’ tastes shift. And with the economy slowing this year, there’s also the additional pressure of falling spend on beauty. (One of the many reasons we love DIY beauty recipes like homemade body butter.)
Of course, the fact that these layoffs make sense given the broader trends at play doesn’t change the fact that losing your job is a bigger disappointment – especially when it wasn’t tied to anything under your control.
So, here’s to wishing the best for the 127 people who are going to have to find new jobs – hopefully your next chapter is kinder than this one has been.
