You’ve got to love white hot chocolate. It’s like a big warm hug on pretty much any type of day. It’s smooth. It’s creamy. It’s a mug filled with love.
And we all love to be loved, right?
What I DON’T love is paying through the nose for expensive Starbucks drinks – so I wanted to figure out how to make this recipe at home to save money.
And let’s face it – this is a pretty effortless way to give yourself some “self-care.”
You’re just heating up some milk old school style on the stove, and then just adding a few ingredients.
That’s it.
You’re done!
Then just metaphorically guild the lily by topping the hot chocolate with some whipped cream and whatever garnishes appeal to your eye.
Feel free to double or triple the batch! Because you may want to share the love with the people you love. (And let’s face it – it’s a great way to save lots of money vs buying at Starbucks.)

Starbucks white hot chocolate ingredients and tips
The ingredients are simple:
- 1 cup whole milk (if you want to make it vegan, I’d go with coconut milk for similar consistency and thickness)
- ¼ cup white chocolate chips
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
You can make this recipe ahead of time, and I don’t see why you wouldn’t! Just let the white hot chocolate cool down, and store in a thermos or in a covered container in the refrigerator. Simply reheat gently on the stove top over low heat.
I went minimalistic with the garnishes, but you could go wild with them! Why not top with a drizzle of melted dark chocolate, or top with multi-colored chocolate chips! Also, pomegranate seeds or even fresh mint would be a delight here.

1 cup whole milk
1/4 cup white chocolate chips
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
In a medium saucepan over medium low heat, warm the milk until it’s bubbling lightly around the edges, and there’s a stream of steam coming up from the pan. Don’t boil the milk though, you want this to be a gentle process.

Slowly whisk until the chocolate chips are melted.
Pour into a mug, and top with whipped cream, more white chocolate chips, and cocoa powder if desired.
