These tallow lotion bars are your skin’s best friend during the dry winter months! If you suffer from dry skin, tallow is an ingredient that you will want to add to your skincare routine! Whether you use the lotion bars (recipe below) or our tallow balm recipe, your skin will thank you!
Grass-fed beef tallow has been used in soap making and skincare for hundreds of years. Tallow is full of fatty acids that help moisturize the skin, creating a protective layer that prevents water loss and keeps the skin hydrated.
How To Make Tallow Lotion Bars
For this DIY, you will need high-quality grass-fed beef tallow (also labeled beef fat), extra virgin olive oil, beeswax, vitamin E oil, and therapeutic grade essential oils (optional).
Start by measuring the ingredients and place the beeswax and tallow into the top of a double boiler. Bring the bottom pot to a simmer and slowly melt the beeswax and tallow.
Once melted, remove the pan from the heat and add in the olive oil, vitamin E oil, and essential oils. Stir the essential oils into the melted tallow mixture with a metal spoon or rubber spatula.
Next, place the silicon mold on a baking sheet. Then, pour the melted tallow/wax mixture into silicon molds.
Place the molds into a freezer or refrigerator to set for 30 minutes to an hour. Once the tallow lotion bars are set, remove them from the molds and place them in a storage container.
Store the lotion bars in a cool place to prevent them from melting.
How To Use Tallow Lotion Bars
Allow the tallow bar to come to room temperature before using. Rub the lotion bar in the palm of your hand in a circular motion. Apply the lotion to your skin. A little goes a long way so start with a small amount. Apply the lotion onto your hands until you’ve covered all the surfaces you need to moisturize.
FAQ
Are these bars suitable for all skin types?
Yes, the ingredients chosen are generally well-tolerated by various skin types, even sensitive skin. However, I suggest doing a patch test to ensure there are no allergic reactions.
Can I customize the essential oils used?
Absolutely! You can personalize the scent of your lotion bars by choosing essential oils that appeal to you. Popular choices include lavender, chamomile, and geranium oil.
How should I store the lotion bars?
Store the hard lotion bar in a cool, dry place. If exposed to high temperatures, they may soften. Using a tin or container can help protect them.
Can these tallow lotion bars be used on the face?
I suggest doing a patch test on your face before using the lotion bars on your face. I use this lotion bar recipe on my face, but different skin types may react differently.
How long do the tallow lotion bars last?
With proper storage, these bars can last for several months to years. However, using them within one year is recommended for optimal freshness.
Is it possible to make these lotion bars vegan?
No, these bars contain grass-fed tallows and beeswax, which are animal products. If you’re looking for a vegan lotion bar, try my coconut oil lotion bars and substitute the beeswax with Carnauba wax, which is a plant-based alternative to beeswax.
What can be used in place of olive oil?
Other liquid natural oils like jojoba oil and sweet almond oil can be used in place of olive oil.
