Texas claims the most Burger King restaurants, but West Virginia takes the crown when population enters the equation. Even as Burger King customers have questioned combo prices, the chainโs geography reveals some surprising strongholds far from the most populous states.
A nationwide location count from September 2026 puts Texas, Florida and California at the top by sheer restaurant numbers. Switch to locations per 100,000 people, however, and the familiar heavyweights largely disappear. Southern and Appalachian states rise instead.

The 10 states with the most Burger King locations
- Texas โ 576 locations
- Florida โ 501 locations
- California โ 488 locations
- New York โ 356 locations
- Ohio โ 291 locations
- Pennsylvania โ 287 locations
- Illinois โ 272 locations
- Georgia โ 269 locations
- Michigan โ 250 locations
- North Carolina โ 237 locations
Texas leads Florida by 75 restaurants, while Florida actually edges out more populous California for second place. That result makes Florida one of the more unexpected entries in the raw-count list. New York finishes fourth, but Ohio comes fifth despite a population considerably smaller than New Yorkโs. Michigan also holds a top-ten position.
The 10 states with the most Burger King locations per capita
These figures measure locations per 100,000 people, using the U.S. Census Bureauโs July 1, 2025 state population estimates. The unrounded rates determine the order; figures shown here are rounded to two decimal places.
- West Virginia โ 62 locations; 3.51 per 100,000 residents
- Louisiana โ 144 locations; 3.12 per 100,000 residents
- Mississippi โ 85 locations; 2.88 per 100,000 residents
- Alabama โ 144 locations; 2.77 per 100,000 residents
- Indiana โ 190 locations; 2.73 per 100,000 residents
- South Dakota โ 24 locations; 2.57 per 100,000 residents
- New Mexico โ 54 locations; 2.54 per 100,000 residents
- Michigan โ 250 locations; 2.47 per 100,000 residents
- Tennessee โ 180 locations; 2.46 per 100,000 residents
- Ohio โ 291 locations; 2.44 per 100,000 residents
West Virginiaโs 62 Burger Kings represent about 3.51 restaurants per 100,000 residents, putting it ahead of every other state. Louisiana follows with 144, and Mississippi takes third despite having just 85 locations in total. Neither Louisiana nor Mississippi appears among the biggest ten states for restaurant counts.
South Dakotaโs entry is especially striking: 24 Burger Kings are enough for sixth place once the stateโs relatively small population is considered. New Mexico also makes the per-capita ranking with only 54. Ohio and Michigan are the two states that manage to show up in both lists, suggesting their Burger King footprints are substantial both absolutely and relative to population.
SphereScout counted 6,725 locations across the 50 states and Washington, D.C. It retained 30 listings marked temporarily closed, so these counts should not be confused with the number serving customers on any given day. The rankings themselves compare states, not D.C.
Location counts come from SphereScoutโs state-by-state Burger King data, dated September 8, 2026. Different restaurant-location directories sometimes report different totals because their collection dates and inclusion rules differ. Both lists above consistently use this single dataset.
