Intro

Chipotle Mexican Grill started in Colorado in 1993.
Since then, it’s grown like wildfire and currently has over 3,500 locations!
Here are the 13 states that have at least 100 locations. Hint: Colorado isn’t one of them!
#13 North Carolina

Locations: 100
The land of North Carolina-style barbecue has plenty of room for Colorado-style Mexican food!
For lovers of barbecue AND burritos, Chipotle has recently had Smoked Brisket as a limited-time protein choice.
#12 Arizona

Locations: 103
Arizonans outkick their coverage a bit when it comes to Chipotle…
Despite only the 14th most populous state, Arizona is 12th in the number of Chipotle locations. Not too shabby. We’ll see if any state does better!
#11 New Jersey

Locations: 107
New Jersey is known for its wonderfully old school diners. And residents think New York has nothing on its bagels.
But it also has a nearby Chipotle no matter which exit you call home!
#10 Georgia

Locations: 115
Georgia has some SERIOUS restaurant chain cred.
It housed the first Chick-fil-A, the first Waffle House, and the first Chicken Salad Chick (if you know, you know).
Georgia also started Chipotle competitor Moe’s Southwest Grill, but Chipotle’s is still winning over Moe’s 115 locations to 89.
#9 Maryland

Locations: 118
We wondered in Arizona at #12 about which state would outrank its population the most.
Look no further!
Even without any seafood for the crab-crazy Chesapeake region, Chipotle’s 118 Maryland locations ranks it ninth despite Maryland ranking just 19th in population!
#8 Virginia

Locations: 137
If you’re wondering, it’s Alexandria, a suburb of DC located in Northern Virginia, that has the most Chipotles in Virginia.
With seven locations, Alexandria ekes past Virginia’s largest city, Virginia Beach — which isn’t too shabby with six locations!
#7 Pennsylvania

Locations: 141
Continuing the city wars here, this time between Pennsylvania’s two NFL cities…
By Chipotle’s reckoning, Pittsburgh beats Philly five field goals to two touchdowns. That’s 15-14 for the non-football lovers out there.
#6 Illinois

Locations: 176
In the land of McDonald’s (as well as Lincoln), Chipotle still has an impressive number of locations.
But don’t fret Fry Guys, McDonald’s still outnumber Chipotles more than 3:1 statewide!
#5 New York

Locations: 225
Start spreading the news … New York is a top 5 Chipotle state!
The official 5 boroughs tally is 103:
Manhattan 58
Brooklyn 25
Bronx 16
Queens 2
Staten Island 2
#4 Ohio

Locations: 256
The Heart of It All includes semi-upscale Mexican food!
Cincinnati wins the battle of the three “C” cities with 23 locations within its confines with Columbus at 21 and Cleveland lagging at 5.
Note that Chipotle doesn’t generally include suburbs in their counts.
#3 Florida

Locations: 263
If you’re in Miami, we hope you try the Cuban food. And if you’re in Orlando, we hope you pair more than just Chipotle with your Disney experience.
That said, there are 19 Chipotles in Orland and 16 in Miami.
A special shoutout to Jacksonville with a surprising 14!
#2 Texas

Locations: 321
Just about everything might be bigger in Texas, but it’s still only good for #2 on our Chipotle list.
In fact, if we added Illinois’s restaurant count to Texas’s, we still wouldn’t catch #1…
#1 California

Locations: 504
Did you guess California based on its massive population and its love of relatively healthier fare? If so, congratulations!
And congrats to LA for its 25 locations. If you guessed San Francisco as #2, though, you’d finally miss one … Sacramento, San Jose, and San Diego all tie for the second-most Chipotles in California with 14 each.
Enjoy your future burrito … you’ve got to be hungry for one by now!
