Introduction

Surprisingly – and contrary to its reputation – Texas really doesn’t smoke that much vs. other states.
It’s in the bottom half with states like Michigan and Vermont smoking more than it does.
Let’s get to the rankings…
I bet you’ll never guess who’s #1…

A few important data notes:

To arrive at our conclusions, which we double-checked in early 2025, we used the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Overall, about 11.5% of US adults reported smoking, according to CDC data.
So the lowest state – Utah, at 7.9% of adults smoking – is about 50% lower than the US average.
Meanwhile the highest state, reporting an adult smoking rate of 23.8%, is more than double the US rate.

Summary

The Top 10 are:
10) Indiana
9) Missouri
8) Tennessee
6 (tie) Arkansas
6 (tie) Alabama
5) Mississippi
4) Ohio
3) Louisiana

A few final notes

One thing I’d like to see is better coverage of vaping products – certainly they seem to be pretty ubiquitous, and I’d like more information on how common their use is, especially among teenagers.
More broadly, of course, smoking is just one of many facets to health.
And that brings me to two important questions:
