Utah’s first Buc-ee’s is still coming—but travelers should not expect to see the giant beaver sign anytime soon. After the chain chose Springville instead of Salt Lake City, the project ran into a challenge that has nothing to do with Buc-ee’s itself: There is almost nothing at the proposed site.
The location is planned near 1400 North and 2600 West, west of Interstate 15 in Springville. It would sit near Exit 261, roughly 50 miles south of Salt Lake City.
Plans call for a 74,000-square-foot travel center, 120 fueling positions, electric-vehicle chargers and more than 200 full-time jobs. Springville’s City Council unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding and development agreement with Buc-ee’s in September 2025.
The latest twist is that the agreement did not clear the way for immediate store construction.
The property currently lacks the roads, water lines, sewer service and electrical infrastructure needed to support a Buc-ee’s. Before the company can build its store, Springville and Buc-ee’s must effectively create an entire development area around it.
That caused concern when residents saw months pass without bulldozers arriving. Rumors even began circulating in early 2026 that Buc-ee’s had abandoned Utah.
Springville officials pushed back. City Director of Administration Patrick Mooney told FOX 13 that the store is still on its way and that the delays come down to process, not second thoughts. He noted that nothing visible happens on the ground for a long stretch, particularly on a site with no existing development around it.
The city has agreed to reimburse Buc-ee’s for several improvements. Those include $625,000 toward a sewer lift station, half the cost of certain curb-to-curb street work, future traffic-signal infrastructure at 1400 North and 2600 West, and water-line expenses. Access improvements will also require coordination with the Utah Department of Transportation.
The result is a two-stage timeline. Buc-ee’s real estate director Stan Beard told the council the company was nine months to a year from breaking ground, with the store opening 15 to 18 months after that.
If everything proceeds smoothly, Mooney has said the store could open in spring 2028, while cautioning that these processes take a couple of years. That remains a target rather than a guaranteed opening date.
Utah currently has no Buc-ee’s locations. The Springville project would become the chain’s first in the state and another major step in its western expansion following new stores in Colorado and Arizona.
For Utah fans, the latest development is both reassuring and frustrating. Buc-ee’s has not canceled its plans, and local officials remain committed to the project. However, the first visible construction may involve sewer pipes and roads—not brisket smokers and fuel canopies.
The beaver is still coming. It simply needs Springville to build the neighborhood first.
