A major beverage company is scaling back operations at an Ohio facility, putting dozens of local jobs at risk. The company has changed its original plans for the site, however, allowing the facility to remain open in a different capacity.
Refresco to eliminate 44 jobs
Refresco Beverages is eliminating 44 jobs at its Carlisle, Ohio, facility as the company transitions the site from beverage manufacturing to a distribution center.
The change represents a revision to plans announced earlier this year. Refresco initially said it would permanently close the Carlisle facility and lay off approximately 63 employees. The company now plans to repurpose the site for warehousing and distribution, reducing the number of affected workers to 44 (this change in plans was announced in August).
The facility is located at 300 Industry Drive in Carlisle, near Dayton. Refresco is one of the world’s largest independent beverage solutions providers, producing and distributing beverages for major brands and retailers.
Manufacturing operations are ending
Refresco’s original WARN filing said the company planned to discontinue manufacturing operations at the Carlisle facility because of customer needs and high operating costs. Manufacturing operations were originally scheduled to end in June, followed by the closure of warehousing operations in July.
Under the revised plan, the building will instead continue operating as a distribution center.
The decision means fewer employees will lose their jobs than initially expected, but 44 workers will still be affected by the restructuring.
Workers face layoffs as facility changes
The Carlisle facility has served as both a beverage manufacturing and distribution operation, with employees involved in bottling, quality control, warehousing, logistics, and distribution.
When the original closure was announced, Refresco said it would provide affected employees with severance packages, job fairs, and assistance with resume writing. Seven employees were also offered positions at other Refresco locations.
The latest change offers a reprieve for some workers, but the end of manufacturing operations represents a significant shift for the Carlisle facility.
For the local workforce, the transition means the beverage plant will not disappear entirely, but dozens of manufacturing jobs will still be lost as Refresco restructures its Ohio operations.
