Mississippi’s restaurant scene recently lost a seafood spot that had quickly become part of downtown Bay St. Louis. Its shutdown joins the broader wave of restaurant closures that have surprised diners across America, but this one came with an unusual cause: weather damage.
Field’s Crab Shack is now closed indefinitely after heavy rains damaged its Court Street home in Bay St. Louis.

Field’s Crab Shack opened in October 2025, giving Bay St. Louis another seafood destination with boiled, steamed and fried seafood, plus rooftop views of the bay. The restaurant was part of the Nicaud Restaurant Group, whose other South Mississippi restaurants include Field’s Steak & Oyster House in Bay St. Louis, Field’s Italian in Pass Christian and Ocean Springs, and the Bacchus restaurants on the Coast.
The restaurant closed on June 7 after severe early-June rain damaged the building. More than a foot of rain fell in parts of Hancock County that weekend. Sun Herald reporting said water seeped through the roof membrane, got into the lights and flooded parts of the restaurant. Owner Jourdan Nicaud said the building may not be ready for business again until the end of the year.
Notably, the damage was not tied to the remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur or the tornadoes that hit the Gulf Coast that same weekend, according to nola.com. Nicaud said he did not know whether those storms caused any additional flooding at the restaurant.
In a Facebook announcement, Nicaud said the restaurant had planned to stay open longer, but “Mother Nature had other plans.” Staff members were expected to shift to other Nicaud family restaurants while the group dealt with the damage.
That detail makes Field’s different from many closures. It was not a restaurant quietly losing momentum. It was a young seafood spot whose building gave out in the middle of its busiest season.
The timing is more complicated than a simple sudden ending, though. Nicaud told the Sun Herald that he and his brother, Field Nicaud, had already been weighing a switch to a new concept after the summer. The damage accelerated a change that was arguably coming anyway.
The wording also matters. Field’s is closed indefinitely, rather than officially gone forever. The owners have hinted that more plans could be shared later, and the company still operates several related restaurants in the region.
For now, though, Bay St. Louis diners have lost the Field’s Crab Shack they knew: a downtown seafood spot with Gulf Coast flavors, rooftop views and a short but memorable run.
