Intro

Buc-ee’s is amazing.
The average Buc-ee’s is 50,000+ square feet – more than 1/3 the size of your average Costco, and 10x the size of your typical convenience store.
And they use all that space to jam in a TON of stuff.
It’s an amazing experience any time you go inside.

The data tell another story

It turns out, however, that customers prefer not one, but TWO convenience stores to Buc-ee’s.
We have this information courtesy of the American Customer Satisfaction Index LLC’s newest report on convenience stores.
In the report, Buc-ee’s got a customer satisfaction score of 80 – very impressive – but was edged out by two other brands, one of which received a score of 81, and the other of 82.
Here’s why:

#2: QuikTrip

If you don’t live in the South or Midwest, you may not be familiar with QuikTrip.
QuikTrip has 1,112 locations, with the majority located in Arizona, Georgia, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas.
While the survey doesn’t tell us why people chose one particular brand over another, we can make some educated guesses.
QuikTrip is known for superb customer service, clean bathrooms (just like Buc-ee’s), great food (especially on rollers), and a small and efficient footprint so people can get in and out.
(That contrasts with Buc-ee’s’ more…rambling store design!)

#1: Wawa

If you don’t live on the Eastern seaboard, you wouldn’t know this, but Wawa is absolutely beloved here.
It’s about the same size as QuikTrip – 1,100 locations, mostly in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York – but rapidly expanding as well.
Their prepared food is second to none – hoagies, chicken tenders, Sizzli breakfast sandwiches, hash browns – they’ve got it all.
Plus – Wawa’s rewards program is a key differentiator, as it’s quite generous (compared to Buc-ee’s, which has none).
People love free stuff, plain and simple!

– BP: 77
