A Southern institution

Love her or not, Paula Deen was an icon in Southern cooking.
Her location in Foley brought all the classics: fried chicken, creamy mac and cheese, collard greens, biscuits, banana pudding… you name it.
All served family-style, all drenched in butter.
It wasn’t just a restaurant. It was an experience.

It was a centerpiece at OWA

OWA is a large entertainment destination in Foley, Alabama – home to a theme park, indoor water park, shops, restaurants, and live shows.
The name comes from the Muscogee Creek word for “big water” (pronounced “oh-wah”).
When it first opened, Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen was one of its flagship restaurants – drawing in bus tours, tourists, and big family groups from all over the Gulf Coast.
So when it shut down, it wasn’t just a loss for diners. It left a giant hole in the heart of Foley’s biggest attraction.

Gone in a flash

The closure came suddenly. No soft landing.
OWA confirmed it in a short statement, but didn’t offer much explanation beyond “strategic changes.”
The kitchen was dark by the end of January. Locals had barely enough time to get in one last bite.

Official word? The parent company was “re-evaluating its portfolio.”
Unofficial word? High overhead. Slipping foot traffic. Possibly fallout from Paula’s still-controversial brand.
But no matter the reason, 60+ employees lost their jobs. And the city lost one of its biggest tourist draws.

The vibe was unmatched

Say what you want, but the vibe was something.
Antique décor. Southern kitsch. Servers who talked to you like family.
And those bottomless portions? People came hungry and left in a food coma, with a selfie in front of Paula’s wall-size portrait on the way out.

It wasn’t just tourists. Foley locals loved this place too.
It hosted birthday brunches. Church groups. Family reunions.
Now? It’s a giant empty building in the middle of OWA’s dining district. Like something’s missing.
Because… it is.

Many employees said they were caught off guard.
Some found out the same week. Others were mid-shift when the news broke.
No big severance. No smooth transition. Just a “thanks” and a goodbye.

I don’t know how I feel about restaurant chains tied to celebrities, but they’ve been folding fast…
Guy Fieri’s places have closed. So have several Wahlburgers. Even a handful of Gordon Ramsay locations are struggling.
Turns out… people want more than just a famous name on the menu.

A couple spots have quietly stepped up since Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen went under, and they’re worth a try!

Lambert’s in nearby Foley has been packed lately, and for good reason.
Known as the “Home of Throwed Rolls,” it’s got that same hearty, old-school feel. Huge portions. Southern comfort food. Servers slinging rolls across the dining room.
It’s chaotic, it’s fun, and it’s FILLING.

If you’re after something a little quieter (but still loaded with Southern charm), Wolf Bay’s Foley location is worth a visit.
Family-owned and proudly local, it’s been serving up fried green tomatoes, gumbo, hush puppies, and pecan-crusted everything since the 1970s.
No rolls flying through the air. No celebrity name on the sign.
Just really good food, friendly service, and a cozy, coastal-Southern vibe that feels like home.

But nothing’s quite the same

Let’s be honest though, nothing fully replaces Paula’s Family Kitchen.
It had scale. It had flair. It had that butter-soaked charm you can’t fake.
Whether you were a diehard fan or just in it for the buffet… it left a mark.

Will another Paula Deen restaurant pop up?

There are still a few Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen locations open: Pigeon Forge, Nashville, Myrtle Beach.
But in Foley? There are no signs of a comeback.
And with the brand’s slow shrinkage, it’s hard to see it ever returning.

The bigger question

Was this just one restaurant closing, or a sign that Southern buffet culture is fading?
Labor costs are up. Tourists want quicker experiences. And younger generations aren’t exactly lining up for all-you-can-eat gravy boats.
Gen Z is way more health-conscious than previous generations ever were.

My son and his family lived in Foley and ate at Paula Deen’a one time. Said they would never go back. He said he could get the same food from a can for much cheaper. They were very disappointed.
