Michigan’s restaurant industry has seen another round of notable closures, with three well-known establishments announcing they are shutting down after years of serving their communities. While each closure has its own circumstances, rising operating costs, changing consumer habits, and ongoing financial pressures continue to challenge independent restaurants across the state.
Wright & Company serves its final meal
Downtown Detroit favorite Wright & Company closed on July 3 after a successful 12-year run. Located inside the historic Wright-Kay Building on Woodward Avenue, the restaurant became known for its creative shared plates, craft cocktails, and sweeping views of downtown Detroit. Owners said the closure marks the end of the current concept, with plans to introduce a new restaurant in the space in the future.
Cadillac Straits Brewing says goodbye
Madison Heights’ Cadillac Straits Brewing Company and its companion restaurant, The Supply House, officially closed on July 18 after seven years in business. In a message to customers, the owners cited difficult market conditions and the lingering effects of opening shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic, saying continued operations were no longer financially sustainable. The brewery thanked its loyal staff and customers while celebrating the community it built over the years.
Marrow consolidates operations
Detroit’s acclaimed Marrow restaurant also recently closed its original West Village location as part of a broader business reorganization. Rather than leaving the market, the company is consolidating operations at its larger Eastern Market location, allowing it to focus resources on a single destination while continuing to serve customers.
Although each restaurant’s story is different, the recent closures underscore the difficult environment many independent restaurants continue to navigate. From lease changes and shifting business strategies to ongoing economic pressures, Michigan’s dining landscape continues to evolve as operators adapt to changing conditions.
