Trader Joe’s has been adding stores around the country as part of an expansion pipeline spanning more than a dozen states. In New York’s Capital Region, however, the chain is addressing demand by making an existing store substantially larger.
Construction is underway to expand the Trader Joe’s at 79 Wolf Road in Colonie. The project will add 2,913 square feet to the existing 13,000-square-foot store, create a second entrance and provide 36 additional parking spaces.
Neighboring storefronts made room for the project
The work is highly visible because buildings next to Trader Joe’s have been demolished. The former Honey Baked Ham building and two vacant adjoining storefronts were cleared to create room for the expansion, new access and added parking.
Colonie officials approved demolition permits, a store build-out permit and signage for the additional entrance. Town Supervisor Peter Crummey told the Times Union that the new doorway will be on the south side of the store.
The Wolf Road Trader Joe’s opened in 2012 as the Capital Region’s first location. Its relatively compact footprint and busy parking lot have long reflected the chain’s popularity, making additional space and parking particularly relevant to regular shoppers.
Trader Joe’s has not announced a completion date
Although demolition and construction are progressing, no completion date has been made public. Trader Joe’s also had not provided details about how the added square footage will be used when the latest project update was reported.
That means customers should not assume the remodel will add a particular department or service. Trader Joe’s typically operates smaller stores than conventional supermarkets and focuses on a curated mix of private-label groceries, frozen foods, snacks and seasonal products.
The project is an expansion of the existing Wolf Road store, not a relocation. Shoppers should check locally for temporary changes to entrances, parking and store access while work continues. For Colonie, the investment offers a clear sign that Trader Joe’s sees continued demand at the location more than a decade after its arrival. The demolished buildings may look dramatic now, but the finished project should leave customers with a larger store, another way in and dozens of additional places to park.
