
An upscale Mexican restaurant in San Diego’s coastal La Jolla neighborhood is preparing to close its doors, marking another loss for the region’s hospitality scene as restaurants across California continue to face mounting economic pressures.
The closure will also lead to significant job losses, highlighting the broader challenges confronting the state’s restaurant industry.
Restaurant announces closure
Red O La Jolla, an upscale Mexican restaurant known for its modern take on traditional cuisine, is set to close its location in the seaside San Diego community. The closure is set for April 20, 2026.
The restaurant offered a menu of elevated Mexican dishes, including fresh seafood, tacos, and specialty cocktails, and had become a destination for both locals and tourists visiting La Jolla. The restaurant was part of the larger Red O brand, which operates several locations across California.
The reason behind the closure is due to the lease not being renewed. “After nine incredible years in La Jolla, our lease will not be renewed, and as a result, we are faced with the difficult decision to close this chapter,” said Red O CEO and owner Rick Teasta.
Dozens of employees affected
According to a filing under California’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, the closure will result in layoffs affecting approximately 91 employees.
WARN notices are required when large employers plan mass layoffs or business closures, giving workers advance notice so they can prepare for job transitions. The layoffs are expected to impact a wide range of positions, including kitchen staff, servers, and management.
Part of broader restaurant industry challenges
The shutdown reflects wider headwinds affecting restaurants across California, where rising food costs, higher wages, lease issues, and fluctuating customer traffic have placed increasing strain on operators.
Many restaurants, particularly in high-cost markets and tourist destinations like La Jolla, have found it difficult to maintain profitability amid these pressures.
As Red O La Jolla prepares to close, its departure adds to a growing list of restaurant closures in the state, signaling the continued volatility facing California’s dining industry.
