The losses just keep piling up in Virginia.
And unfortunately, a series of recent painful factory closures in Virginia were only the prelude to more losses as the economy rapidly sours.
Earlier this year, VF Corp (owner of brands like North Face) closed its distribution center in Martinsville, Virginia – and eliminated 242 jobs, too.
And while the decision to close the Martinsville facility was made last year, its loss is emblematic of the difficulties that fashion brands – even North Face – are facing as the US economy cools off (and arguably inches toward recession).

The trade war has, of course, soured relations between the US and lots of erstwhile friends and allies – leading to canceled orders and even boycotts.
And as the overall economic climate declines, American consumers are ratcheting back their spending. Paying up for clothing just moves down the priority list.
With that in mind, unfortunately, we may see more closures and layoffs to come in the future as companies continue to try to rationalize their spending and save money wherever they can.
But knowing that these are all reasonable decisions is certainly cold comfort to the 242 hardworking Virginians who have to find new work.
