These days, it’s possible for those on a gluten-free diet to still enjoy their favorite fast food once in a while, thanks to expanding menu selections and items that can be easily customized. Some restaurants are more accommodating than others, but you can find gluten-free fare at major chains from McDonald’s and Burger King to Chick-fil-A and KFC.
If Wendy’s is one of your favorite fast food stops, you’ve got some options when it comes to gluten-free grub there. So what exactly can you order if you’re avoiding gluten?
We’re digging into all of the gluten-free menu items that you can either order as is or modify to enjoy a gluten-free meal or snack next time you’re at Wendy’s.

Gluten-free food and drinks available on the Wendy’s menu
While Wendy’s doesn’t offer any gluten-free bread or bun options, most of the ingredients on the burgers and sandwiches themselves are naturally gluten-free, from the meat or eggs to the cheese, veggies, and condiments. So if you’re willing to forgo the bun, you can order almost any sandwich sans bread (or ask for it to be lettuce wrapped) to make it a gluten-free meal.
Otherwise, there are a few items on the menu that are naturally gluten-free as ordered, like chili and apple slices, french fries and baked potatoes, and the fast food chain’s famous Frosty. And there are other items that you can modify slightly to remove any gluten-containing ingredients, like several of Wendy’s salads.
The one important caveat, however, is that although you can order or modify certain items to be gluten-free, Wendy’s cannot guarantee a lack of cross-contamination and thus cannot guarantee the item is 100% gluten-free. While some foods don’t technically contain any gluten, the restaurant uses shared prep spaces and fryers where the food can come in contact with other ingredients that do contain gluten – so if you’re extra sensitive to the allergen or if you have celiac disease, this is something to consider before you eat there.
While breaded or flour-based items like the crispy chicken sandwiches, chicken nuggets, french toast sticks, and baked goods are all no-gos, that still leaves plenty on the menu that can be enjoyed as a gluten-free meal.

Yes, Wendy’s french fries are technically gluten-free as they are not made with any wheat or gluten-containing ingredients. However, the fries are often cooked in a shared fryer and frying oil with other gluten-containing food items, so cross-contamination is always a possibility.
While there is always a risk of cross-contamination due to shared preparation areas, tools, and appliances, there are certain items that may come with a lower risk and thus are more celiac-safe orders. These include the chili, baked potatoes, chocolate and vanilla Frosty, and fountain sodas.
Yes! Wendy’s signature Frosty milkshakes, both in Classic Chocolate and Vanilla flavors, are gluten free. These items are made with milk, sugar, corn syrup, cream, whey, nonfat dry milk, and other ingredients (both natural and artificial) that do not contain gluten.
